Adams has contusion, Zimmerman playing nine innings for P-Nats

Nationals first baseman Matt Adams was hit by a pitch Tuesday night in the fourth inning of the 2-0 loss to the Orioles. Afterward, Adams was seen gingerly heading to first base.

Tonight, manager Davey Martinez has started veteran AsdrÃºbal Cabrera at first base, saying Adams is favoring his right leg a bit.

"He's got a little contusion," Martinez said. "His knee is banged up a little bit. So rather than let him start and then all of a sudden something happens we will use him off the bench today. He will be available to pinch-hit."

The starting first baseman from earlier in the season, Ryan Zimmerman, will make his eighth rehab appearance tonight in his sixth game with high Single-A Potomac in Woodbridge, Va. Zimmerman has four hits in his last three games for the P-Nats as he recovers from plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

"Zim is going to play again tonight, play nine innings," Martinez said. "He's doing well. I saw him. He came in and worked out with us today. He feels good. He will play today, have a day off tomorrow and then we will see where he's at then. He's another guy that may be able to join us this weekend."

With Sean Doolittle, Roenis ElÃas and Zimmerman all close to returning, Martinez might be able to benefit a bit when rosters can be expanded Sept. 1, not having to make three cuts to add three players.

"I like the fact that Sept. 1 is just around the corner," Martinez said. "It makes things a little bit easier for our roster."
