Acquired by the Orioles from the Chicago White Sox last Aug. 30 for minor league pitchers Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar, outfielder Alejandro De Aza is off to a good start in his first full season with team.
He has hit safely in all six games he has played, batting .333 (9-for-27) with one double, two homers, four RBIs, one stolen base and a .950 OPS.
In his last four starts, De Aza has three multi-hit games, going 7-for-18 (.389).
"Been working hard and when we we work hard, good things happen," he said simply today, sizing up his good start at the plate.
De Aza, who turned 31 on Saturday, hit .293/.341/.537 in 20 games after the Orioles traded for him last season and the club went 14-6 in those games.
De Aza will bat ninth tonight with Everth Cabrera batting first at shortstop. So far, every at-bat he has this year has come in the leadoff spot, a spot where he has 63 percent of his career at-bats.
"Yes, that is something I've been doing for a long time in the minor leagues and a couple of years in the big leagues. Very comfortable hitting there," he said.
Tonight, when the O's lineup turns over, Cabrera and De Aza will be batting back-to-back, putting two speed guys ahead of the power in the lineup. De Aza said maybe they can create some opportunities on the bases.
"I always look forward to try to steal a base or do something with my speed. That is one of my weapons and I look to use it any way I can," he said.
De Aza said he feels very comfortable as an Oriole right now and that this feels like his baseball home.
He is sharing an outfield right now with center field Adam Jones, who is batting .714 (10-for-14) his last four games with three homers and seven RBIs.
"He is locked in. Hope he stays like that for the rest of the season," De Aza said.
