SALISBURY, Md - Dylan Bundy was clearly up for the challenge tonight in his latest outing for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Matched up with Matt Barnes, Boston's first-round pick (No. 19 overall) last year, Bundy retired all 12 Greenville batters he faced with six strikeouts over four perfect innings.
The game was scoreless heading to the top of the fifth as Barnes fanned nine Shorebirds over four shutout frames.
Bundy seemed to get better as the game wore on as he needed 15 pitches in the first, 11 in the second, eight in the third and 10 in the fourth. Of his 44 pitches, 32 were strikes.
Bundy has now thrown 13 shutout innings without allowing a hit to start his pro career.
Four different South Atlantic League teams are now a combined 0-for-39 with 21 strikeouts against him. He walked a batter in his last outing and that is the only hitter to reach base against him on the year.
His fastball tonight ranged from 96 to 98 mph and he mixed in several nasty changeups and curveballs tonight as well. From this seat, he had pretty much everything working this evening.
He fanned two batters in the first, one in the second, one in third and two more in the fourth as Greenville went 12 up and out against him on this chilly night at Perdue Stadium.
Zach Davies has come on to pitch in the top of the fifth for Delmarva.
Update: Delmarva leads 2-1 after six and a half innings. In the last of the sixth the Shorebirds took a 2-0 lead on a Connor Narron RBI single and a Nicky Delmonico RBI groundout.
After Davies pitched two scoreless innings taking over for Bundy, Greenville pushed across a run in the top of the seventh off Miguel Chalas to make it a 2-1 game.
Update: Delmarva earns a 4-2 win. Delmonico's two-run single in last of 8th broke 2-2 tie and the Shorebirds held on to improve to 10-8 overall and 6-2 at home.
