Another look at Saturday's tough loss, plus minors notes

When the Orioles take a one-run lead to the eighth inning, they usually feel pretty good about getting the win in that game. But this time, Darren O'Day gave up the lead and Zach Britton got injured.

Not at all what the Orioles had in mind when they took the field leading the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in the eighth last night. The Orioles had been 10-0 in 2016 when leading after seven innings.

Seeing the bullpen give it up and have its worst night of the year was about as strange as seeing Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop each make an error in the same inning. But we saw that, too.

Despite all that, Chris Davis, batting just .143 off left-handed pitching this year, delivered a big two-run double off Zach Duke to tie the game 7-7 in the last of the eighth. The Orioles had come from 3-1 down to get a lead and now they had rallied for the 7-7 tie after losing that lead.

The stage was set for Britton to set down the White Sox in the ninth and the Orioles to produce a walk-off win in the bottom of the inning. This time, that didn't happen.

The Orioles have had quite a weekend hitting Chicago pitchers. Coming into this series, some of the numbers the Sox staff had put up were quite impressive.

That included a major league best 2.24 team ERA. They had allowed just 10 runs total during a six-game win streak entering this series. Their rotation had recorded 17 quality starts and their pitchers had allowed one run or less in 11 of their 22 games.

But in this series, O's hitters have scored 23 runs on 37 hits with six doubles and six homers. That is a team average of .343, and the Orioles are batting .379 (11-for-29) with runners in scoring position in taking two of three games.

Pedro Alvarez and Hyun Soo Kim each had three hits last night. Alvarez now is 7-for-12 over his last four games with three doubles and a homer. Kim is batting .600 (9-for-15) for the year with seven hits over his last 10 at-bats. Impressive.

But it was a frustrating ending for the Orioles last night and now they need to try and beat Chris Sale today to win this series. They also need to find out how long they will be without their closer.

In the minors: Double-A Bowie lefty Chris Lee went seven innings last night, allowing just one run, as the Baysox beat Harrisburg 3-2. Lee is 4-0 with a 2.49 ERA. Corban Joseph had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Single-A Delmarva came up with a 2-1 walk-off win in the 10th on Gerrion Grim's game-ending single. Three Shorebirds had quite a night on the mound as Ofelky Peralta, Patrick Baker and Ryan Meisinger combined to pitch a three-hitter with 18 strikeouts.

Triple-A Norfolk scored five in the top of the ninth to win 5-1 at Indianapolis. Francisco Pena's two-run double broke the 1-1 tie. Ryan Flaherty is hitting .444 (8-for-18) in four games with the Tides.

Single-A Frederick allowed seven runs in the seventh inning, losing 9-8 to Winston-Salem to fall to 7-16. Jomar Reyes went 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored.
