Zach Britton won't be taking the ball today if the Orioles are faced with a save situation. Not less than 24 hours after spraining his left ankle.
He's day-to-day, but today isn't it.
Who knows how long he's going to be sidelined? We hear "sprain" and expect an X-ray, to be followed by an MRI. That's how it always seems to play out. Let's see if we engage in the same dance on a sore ankle.
The Orioles remained hopeful last night that Britton could avoid the disabled list. I already was thinking ahead and guessing that infielder Ryan Flaherty would have been recalled to give manager Buck Showalter a four-man bench.
Darren O'Day could assume closing duties while Britton is unavailable. He's done it in the past.
The three runs allowed last night were the most by O'Day since Aug. 21, 2015 versus the Twins.
The latest forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of rain. If there's a save situation, it's going to be soggy.
Ubaldo Jimenez is 1-2 with a 3.91 ERA in four starts. He's thrown 107 pitches in seven innings, 105 in five innings, 110 in five innings and 102 in six innings. He's stretched out.
Jimenez is 3-4 with a 4.17 ERA in 12 career starts against the White Sox. The current group is batting .297 against him.
Avisail Garcia is 7-for-13 with a double against Jimenez. Brett Lawrie is 4-for-11 with a home run, Austin Jackson is 7-for-23 with 10 strikeouts and Jose Abreu is 2-for-9 with two home runs.
Left-hander Chris Sale is a nightmare for opposing hitters. He's 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA and 0.684 WHIP in five starts, allowing seven earned runs and 21 hits in 38 innings. He's walked five batters and struck out 32.
Have fun with that.
Sale is 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 appearances (four starts) versus the Orioles and 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six appearances (three starts) at Camden Yards.
Mark Trumbo is 5-for-11 with two doubles and a home run against Sale. Adam Jones is 4-for-11 with a home run and J.J. Hardy is 3-for-11 with a home run.
Trumbo has hit safely in 19 of 23 games this season, batting .337/.385/.573 (30-for-89) with 19 RBIs.
