You can call Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy a stopper today because he helped the Orioles halt a seven-game losing streak and start a nine-game homestand with a win.
Bundy gave up two runs over seven innings as the Orioles beat the New York Yankees 3-2 in front of 40,242 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are 26-23 and moved to within 3 1/2 games of the first-place Yankees. The Orioles ended their longest losing streak since July 2011.
Bundy delivered his 10th quality start in 11 games. He gave up seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts, throwing 95 pitches. He improved to 6-3 with an ERA of 2.89.
Bundy matched his season and career high in going seven innings for the fifth time in 2017. In six home starts, he is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.23. He has allowed two earned runs or less in eight starts and the Orioles are 7-4 in his 11 games.
The Orioles won for just the fourth time in 17 games and are 16-7 at home. They ended a four-game Oriole Park losing streak. The Orioles ended a seven-game losing streak in one-run games. The Yankees fall to 29-19 and 3-4 versus the Orioles.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the last of the first against New York left-hander Jordan Montgomery. Joey Rickard led off with a single to center and advanced to second on a Chris Davis groundout. Mark Trumbo's two-out single to left scored him for the lead.
But in the top of the second, the Yankees drew even. Bundy hit Starlin Castro, just the second batter he's hit all year. Castro moved to second on a fly ball, when right fielder Trumbo cut in front of Rickard, who was expecting to make that catch in center. After a Didi Gregorius single put runners on the corners, a sac fly by Aaron Hicks tied it at 1-1.
That tie held only until the Orioles third. Trumbo reached on a one-out error by Castro at second and Trey Mancini singled with two down. Then Jonathan Schoop lined a 1-1 fastball to right for a two-run double and 3-1 lead. Schoop began today batting .323 with runners in scoring position and has five RBIs his past two games.
Aaron Judge homered again off the Orioles when he blasted a 431-foot shot to center off a 95 mph Bundy fastball in the seventh to pull New York within 3-2. The Orioles though he struck out on a checked swing, but given new life, he hit his 17th home run and fifth off Baltimore pitching.
The Orioles bullpen closed out the win as Darren O'Day pitched a 1-2-3 eighth on 13 pitches. Brad Brach fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 10th save in 13 chances.
In the second game of this series on Tuesday night, right-hander Chris Tillman (1-1, 4.43 ERA) faces right-hander Luis Severino (3-2, 3.11 ERA).
