Caleb Joseph and Miguel Gonzalez discuss loss to Yankees

O's starter Miguel Gonzalez gave up runs in just one inning today, but that was enough to beat him.

Gonzalez allowed three runs in the second inning as the New York Yankees beat the Orioles 3-2 at Camden Yards.

Catcher Caleb Joseph talked about Gonzalez's outing.

"I thought he did a really good job of, you know, kind of keeping us engaged in the game and keeping us in it the whole time," Joseph said. "Things didn't go well for him that one inning, but he really did a good job of putting up zeroes and keeping us in it through six.

O's starters have been pitching well since June for the most part and they have an ERA of 1.61 over the last 12 games.

"They've been doing it all year," Joseph said. "Our record indicates it. We outhit them today and usually our offense is there to pick us up. We didn't have it today. Their guy pitched a really good game. He's a nice looking prospect for them. Those are the type of games that sometimes we find a way to win."

Joseph pointed the finger at himself for the double steal New York pulled off in the second. With runners on first and third, Joseph's throw to second was late to get Antoan Richardson as Chris Young stole home.

"If I put the ball in the tagging area, he's out and we're not talking about it," Joseph said. "I just didn't execute. Threw it up the line a bit. If I put it on the money, he's out. I didn't do my job and it cost us a run. Have to be better."

Gonzalez is 4-2 with an ERA of 1.55 his last six outings with six straight quality starts, the longest streak by an O's starter this year.

But he didn't have his best stuff early on as New York took a 3-0 lead.

"You are not always going to be where you want to be," Gonzalez said. "That was a tough inning right there. But we were able to minimize damage afterwards. Wasn't where I wanted to be, but we got through it. Caleb, once again, did a good job back there and we played great defense."

Gonzalez has been getting better as the season has gotten longer. No sign of him tiring.

"Well, first of all, I don't have as many innings this year and that's been a key. Had my injury. But other than that, everything feels great," he said.
