Chris Davis goes on disabled list

The Orioles made the anticipated roster move this afternoon, with first baseman Chris Davis going on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.

First baseman/outfielder David Washington had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk as the corresponding move.

The other move today involves Rule 5 outfielder Anthony Santander, who was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. The 40-man roster remains at 39.

Davis is batting .226/.320/.461 with seven doubles, a triple, a team-leading 14 home runs and 26 RBIs in 61 games. His 95 strikeouts lead the majors by seven over the Rangers' Joey Gallo. His 30 walks put him six ahead of Manny Machado for the team lead.

A left oblique strain landed Davis on the disabled list on April 26, 2014 and he didn't return until May 11. The injury affected Davis the rest of his season, which ended with his suspension Sept 12.

Washington, who hasn't played in the majors, is batting .291/.344/.517 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 26 RBIs in 56 games for the Tides. He's 15-for-37 (.405) in June and 15-for-35 (.429) with three home runs during a nine-game hitting streak.

Washington, 26, has posted a .327 average this season against right-handers. He's also struck out 71 times in 203 at-bats this season.

The Orioles signed Washington to a minor league contract on Nov. 21. They gave him uniform No. 28.

Santander hasn't played this season due to a strained right forearm that prevented him from throwing. He's been at extended spring training.

Santander doesn't figure to fulfill the 90-day obligation to remove his Rule 5 status. The Orioles selected him from the Indians organization at the Winter Meetings.
