Cobb's next start coming in extended spring (tied 3-3)

NEW YORK - Alex Cobb will make his next start in extended spring training in Sarasota.

Cobb will face the Twins on Monday in a noon game at Ed Smith Stadium. He's slated to go six innings after working four and five in simulated games.

The extra start in Florida pushes back Cobb's debut with the Orioles to April 14 or 15 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. There's the slim chance that he could stay down for another outing, but he's more likely to be recalled for the Boston series.

Cobb had a work day today that went well, which prompted the Orioles to increase his schedule to six innings. However, it won't happen in Baltimore.

"It's all based on ... we talk about it every time we talk. He's here for the long haul," Showalter said.

"Heck, he may need another one. It may be another one after that. Listening to him talk, he wants to pitch for us yesterday and he knows when it's right. It's very close. You don't say, 'We're going to lean on you for this' and then all of a sudden change it. We could probably push it and have him pitch on the 9th, but you might not like the long-term results.

"Like I told him today, he could come back on the 14th or 15th and it's not perfect every time out. He knows when it's right. He said it's close, so I'm going to believe him."

Showalter said the amount of days Cobb is optioned and the impact on service time aren't factors in the decision.

"Don't overthink this," Showalter said. "When he's ready, he's coming. When he says, 'I'm ready, let's go,' he's coming."

Mark Trumbo homered today in his latest extended spring training game. He's going to play right field on Saturday, rest on Sunday and play first base the following day.

"We'll revisit what's next," Showalter said.

Trumbo will be sent on an injury rehab assignment before coming off the 10-day disabled list.

Reliever Mychal Givens has allowed three runs and five hits in four innings in his four appearances, walking one batter and striking out five. Showalter said it's a mechanical issue that's been identified.

"Just trying to find his step to start the season," Showalter said. "A little quick. He's got a quick hip right now. He's got a turn and sometimes he gets like a merry-go-round instead of a Ferris wheel, as Jim Palmer puts it well. He kind of gets side to side instead of down the hill.

"He'll be OK. But Mike knows there's cause and effect to everything. But it's not like you just dial up, 'OK, you go pitch that inning, you go pitch that inning.' There are some people in the other dugout who are trying to make it hard on you."

Anthony Santander is back in right field tonight after collecting an RBI double and scoring a run last night in a 5-2 win. He also stole his first base in the majors.

Santander stretched the single into a double and scored standing up on Trey Mancini's two-run single into right field.

"What I'm impressed with is how he's thrown, how he's run the bases and what he did in the offseason," Showalter said. "Brady (Anderson) and I were talking last night going home and Brady said he's been a real pleasure to work with since he first got out there. And I think it makes you realize how handicapped he was with some of the physical issues he had. Now, you can see it in his face. The first time he's felt really good physically in a while for a young guy."

Update: Manny Machado homered off Sabathia with one out in the top of the first inning to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead, but it didn't last long.

Brett Gardner led off the bottom half with a four-pitch walk, Kevin Gausman hit Aaron Judge on the left arm and Giancarlo Stanton tied the game with a single into right field on an 0-2 pitch. Gausman retired the next three batters and stranded two runners.

Update II: Machado homered again in the third, this time into the visiting bullpen to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead.

Update III: Gausman gave up the tying run again in the bottom of the third on Gardner's leadoff double and Judge's bloop single into center field.

Update IV: Chris Davis hit a home run to right-center field in the fourth inning, his first of the season, to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

Update V: Didi Gregorius homered off Miguel Castro with one out in the eighth inning to tie the game 3-3.
