Davis issues statement

Chris Davis issued a statement today regarding his 25-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension begins immediately and covers the last 17 games of the regular season and eight playoff games if the Orioles advance that far. davis-black-deep-thought-helmet-off-sidebar.jpgThis is Davis' second positive test. He's not allowed to be with his teammates at Camden Yards during the suspension. "I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization and especially the fans," Davis said. "I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately." The Orioles are discussing whether to bring up a player from their taxi squad in Sarasota. First baseman Christian Walker, the organization's minor league Player of the Year, is in consideration. "First of all, we've got to get to the postseason," said manager Buck Showalter. "Our goal right now is to get there. It just means we'll be without him for the rest of the regular season." Showalter received a call from Davis around 8 p.m. last night. "It was tough," Showalter said. "It put a little damper on the Ravens game, that's for sure. Like always, in my situation you have to learn to deal with the problems and challenges along the way. If they're self-inflicted and there is no woes is me. And this is self-inflicted. "I'm disappointed. I know Chris is, too. It is what it is. We're going to try and deal with it and move on. The timing is never good. It's one of those challenges." Kelly Johnson is playing third base in Game 1, with Steve Pearce at first. Ryan Flaherty and Jimmy Paredes also can play third. "I've got a lot of confidence in our guys," Showalter said. "I'm always looking at the what-ifs. We've had to put some people in and they've done a nice job for us. "We've got some options. Dan (Duquette)and I talked about it last night. We're going to kind of let things clear today and see if we want to make any adjustments in the roster from Sarasota or not. Right now, I like our options from within." When it was brought up that Davis has endured a disappointing season, Showalter replied, "A lot of people would like to hit 25 to 30 home runs and drive in 80 runs." More to come.
