Delmon Young was asked if it was Orioles magic.
"Magic is the word to use, but we are just trying to beat a very good ballclub in Detroit," Young said. "We did it yesterday and we've been doing it all year against teams in our division. When we get guys on, we feel like we can win.
"They gave us an opportunity with (Adam) Jones getting hit by the pitch. Nelson (Cruz) and (Steve) Pearce came through with base hits, so we had the opportunity."
Made it sound simple anyway.
But Young delivered a huge pinch-hit, three-run double in the eighth inning today - one that capped a four-run rally and turned a 6-3 deficit into a stirring 7-6 Orioles win at Camden Yards.
It was a remarkable comeback win that has the Orioles up 2-0 in the American League Division Series and one game from advancing.
A reporter asked Young what it felt like to come through.
"Just like winning a ballgame," he said.
As he came to the plate with the bases loaded to hit for Ryan Flaherty, Young was already batting .500 this year as a pinch-hitter (10-for-20).
What makes him so good in those situations?
"Being very fortunate," he said. "Could have easily hit a line drive right to the left fielder. It might be a sac fly and he has a chance to get out of the inning.
"I figured he had to try and come near the plate after walking J.J. (Hardy). A bases-loaded situation, doesn't want to fall behind in the count, so I was just looking for something to drive."
So now Young is batting .524 (11-for-21) when pinch-hitting with two doubles, a triple, a homer and eight RBIs.
After his first-pitch double off Joakim Soria, the crowd went crazy waving their orange towels one more time as the Orioles had the lead.
"Just tried to do my job and win a game," Young said. "You don't want to go to Detroit 1-1 when they have (David) Price and (Rick) Porcello going. They would have an opportunity to clinch up there.
"They have three Cy Young winners over there. We know how effective they were and how nasty they can be. Maybe the Kansas City Royals are different because they have nothing but flamethrowers coming in (from the bullpen). Be hard to score against them. Our team, we feel very comfortable that we can score off anybody."
Young said preparation helps make him a good pinch-hitter.
"They let me do what I need to do to get ready so when its time for me to go up there, I'm prepared," Young said.
He sure was today and he produced a swing that will go down as one of the biggest in O's postseason history.
