Dylan Bundy gets the win in his Double-A debut for Bowie

BOWIE, Md. - On his first day in the Eastern League, Dylan Bundy didn't have his best command, but he was good enough to get the win as he moved to his third minor league level this year in Bowie's 5-3 win over Erie in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Bundy pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and three strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches, 56 for strikes in his Double-A debut. Bundy retired the first six batters before allowing a leadoff double in the third that led to the first Erie run. He gave up a one-out double in the fourth and that run scored when shortstop Jonathan Schoop made a two-out error. In the sixth he gave up an infield single but the runner was erased at second trying to steal. He then gave up a double and was replaced by Mike Belfiore and that run would then score on a two-out hit. Bundy threw a high percentage of fastballs, most sitting in the 94 and 95 mph range early in the game and he mixed in more curveballs and changeups as the batting order turned over. Bundy had just an eight-pitch first and 14-pitch second inning. But as his command began to elude him somewhat, he had a 25-pitch fourth and 22-pitch fifth. He threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of 24 batters. With this win, the 19-year-old right-hander is now 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA between Delmarva, Frederick and Bowie this season on 89 2/3 innings pitched with 22 walks and 106 strikeouts. Bundy is scheduled to stay on a routine where he pitches every sixth day. That would allow him to make four starts for the Baysox before the regular season ends Sept. 3. They are scheduled for Aug. 20 at Richmond, Aug. 26 at home versus Harrisburg and Sept. 1 at Harrisburg. As always, that is subject to change. No players or coaches were made available for any interviews between games of this doubleheader, so we'll have to wait to hear how Bundy felt about his outing tonight, but he is a winner on his first night at Double-A.
