Eaton and Rendon get started quickly (Mets win 8-2)

Stephen Strasburg charged up the home crowd with a pair of strikeouts and a scoreless first frame to get the home opener underway at Nationals Park.

In the second, Bruce doubled and went to third on a groundout. With two outs, Strasburg walked Kevin Plawecki. Strasburg was then called for a balk on his pickoff move to first base. Bruce scored from third.

The top of the Nats order connected against Jacob deGrom again in the third. Eaton walked and Rendon doubled to score Eaton, who dove headfirst to the plate away from Plawecki's tag.

Yoenis Cespédes led off the fourth with a solo homer. The Mets and Nats are tied, 2-2. Strasburg got through the frame by striking out Adrían González.

Update: Michael Conforto cranked a two-run shot off of Strasburg in the fifth. Strasburg has allowed five hits through six innings.

Then to begin the sixth, Eaton was replaced in left field by Brian Goodwin. This is concerning for Eaton, who scored on a headfirst slide in the third. He is recovering from major knee surgery.

Goodwin singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Rendon and Harper walked. The bases were loaded with no outs, but Ryan Zimmerman popped out to shallow right field and Howie Kendrick lined out sharply to shortstop.

Trea Turner was then called out on a third strike by home plate umpire Doug Eddings. Turner was ejected after arguing the call. It was Turner's first career ejection. Wilmer Difo took Turner's place at shortstop.

Strasburg finished six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. He threw 92 pitches, 65 for strikes.

After six innings, the Mets lead the Nats 4-2.

Update: Jay Bruce hit a grand slam off of Brandon Kintzler in the seventh. Kintzler walked Conforto and Cespédes prior to Bruce's sixth career grand slam. The Nats have been outscored 28-9 in their last three games after outscoring opponents 29-13 in their first four games.

Mid-seventh, the Mets lead the Nats 8-2.

Update: Kendrick singled to start the ninth but then the Nats went quietly.

Final score: Mets 8, Nats 2.

The Nats have lost three in a row.
