Game update and Machado goes home again (O's win 8-5)

MIAMI - Ubaldo Jimenez hadn't allowed a run in the first inning over seven starts before tonight, a streak that ended with two singles and two stolen bases.

Giancarlo Stanton grounded a single into left field to score Dee Gordon, who led off with a single and swiped second and third base. Catcher Caleb Joseph nearly got him at second, but Gordon advanced to third without a throw.

Jimenez threw 16 pitches, 14 strikes, in the first and fell behind 1-0. Stanton is 4-for-8 against him lifetime.

The sparse crowd at Marlins Park tonight may consist mostly of family and friends of Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, the Miami native who's enjoying a homecoming this weekend.

The Orioles selected Machado with the third overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Brito Miami Private. Asked whether his classmates are here, Machado replied, "My graduating class was 32, so..."

"Im excited my family is going to watch me play in my hometown, excited to be back home," Machado said. "I've always dreamed of this moment, to come play in Marlins Stadium. The day's here. I'll try and soak it all in. I'll finally play in front of my hometown and my whole family, see how it goes."

Machado grew up rooting for the Marlins and attended Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Giants, most remembered for catcher Ivan Rodriguez tagging out J.T. Snow and sending his team to the Championship Series.

"I've always been a Marlins fan," Machado said. "I've been a baseball fan my whole life. You've always got to root for your home team.

"I used to go to a lot of games. My mom, her job had season tickets. They gave us tickets whenever they couldn't go. I got to quite a few games."

Machado didn't milk his first at-bat tonight, popping up the second pitch from Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez. He still received a nice ovation.

"I'm pretty sure everybody's seen me play in the big leagues," Machado said. "There's probably going to be the first time a couple see me play live, but most of it is seeing people from my hometown, playing at home in front of my home fans and my family, basically. Everybody's going to be out here. I'm going to take it all in.

"As a kid, you dreamed about playing in your home state, your home field. I'm going to try to take it all in and enjoy it."

Jimmy Paredes, batting behind Machado, singled to extend his streak of reaching base to 19 games. He's hitting .348 with seven doubles, two triples, six home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored since coming off the disabled list.

With no designated hitter this weekend, Paredes is making his fourth start at second base. Steve Pearce and Everth Cabrera are on the bench.

"It's either him or Steve or Everth," said manager Buck Showalter. "He's swinging the bat pretty good, and I don't know if anybody's really separated himself defensively at second base enough to say there's a huge gap there. I don't think anybody's trying to be what Jonathan (Schoop) or even Ryan (Flaherty) brought there, but we'll get those guys back at some point.

"We want to keep Jimmy in the lineup. In the National League, you try to keep as many guys toward the top of the order that you want to have hit. I thought about hitting him third, but it works kind of good there at second. You have to make your lineup out a little differently, make sure you have double-switch spots throughout it. You also want to make sure that you push guys up when you turn the batting order over."

Down on the farm, outfielder Nolan Reimold went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in Triple-A Norfolk's 11-4 loss to Rochester.

Update: Jimenez has allowed three runs and six hits - all singles - in two innings. He's thrown 47 pitches, 35 for strikes.

The Marlins scored twice in the second, the last run crossing when Jimmy Paredes fielded Marcell Ozuna's grounder and made an ill-advised throw home in an attempt to cut down Adeiny Hechavarria.

Update II: The Orioles scored twice in the fifth inning and trail 3-2. Delmon Young, pinch-hitting for Jimenez, had an RBI double and Machado brought home Caleb Joseph with a ground ball to short.

Young is 3-for-5 as a pinch-hitter this year after going 10-for-20 in the regular season in 2014.

Jimenez allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings, with one walk, four strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 87 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Tyler Wilson will make his second major league appearance.

Update III: The Orioles sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored four runs to lead 6-3.

Caleb Joseph moved the Orioles ahead with a two-run single and a run scored on Paredes' infield hit, which raised his average to .348. He now qualifies for the batting title.

Alvarez committed a huge error when he fielded J.J. Hardy's bunt with the count full and fired the ball over third baseman Martin Prado's head.

Update IV: Former Oriole Michael Morse doubled off Wilson to score Hechavarria and reduce the lead to 6-4. Hunter replaced him with two on and no outs, and he retired the next three batters without another run scoring.

Update V: Machado's two-run double in the eighth increased the Orioles' lead to 8-4.

Paredes has three hits to raise his average to .353. He finally has enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title.

Joseph also has three hits tonight.

Update VI: The Orioles defeat the Marlins 8-5 for their fourth win in the last five games.

The Orioles (19-20) are one game below .500 for the first time since May 6.

Wilson gets his first major league win, joining Mike Wright this month. Zach Britton recorded the final out for his 10th save.

Justin Bour homered off Brad Brach in the ninth to complete the scoring. The bullpen allowed two runs in five innings.
