Updating Norris, Flaherty and more

MIAMI - Bud Norris, making an injury rehab start at Triple-A Norfolk, allowed nine runs and 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Rochester. Kennys Vargas homered twice off him.

Norris walked none and struck out one. He threw 72 pitches, 47 for strikes, before Steve Johnson replaced him.

Norris, weakened by bronchitis, is eligible to come off the disabled list May 26. He could stay on his rehab assignment for 30 days, though the plan called for him to make only one start.

In six starts with the Orioles, Norris has gone 1-4 with a 9.88 ERA in 27 1/3 innings.

Infielder Ryan Flaherty will play nine innings on Saturday at extended spring training and likely report to Norfolk on Monday or Tuesday.

Reliever Wesley Wright, on the disabled list with a strained left trapezius muscle, threw another inning today at extended spring training.

Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia is performing strength exercises on his right shoulder in Sarasota.

"He's not there off the mound yet, but he's following the program," said manager Buck Showalter. "He's doing well."

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop continues to do baseball activities in Sarasota. He won't join the club in Miami.

"He's got work to do in Sarasota," Showalter said. "I think he's getting more out of being there than here because it's very controlled there. But he's starting to do a lot of things to take away that doubt. He doesn't have that tenativeness he had early on."

Showalter is glad to have catcher Matt Wieters with the team. It's an arrangement that benefits both sides.

"I think it's good for him to have him around, too," Showalter said. "You could see him in Tampa. Not rejuvenated but gave him a little juice to finish this thing out. He can see the finish line now. It's been a long road for him and let's hope everything goes well. He's going to do a lot of work here and work Monday in Baltimore and start things up on Tuesday.

"He's a good scout, I can tell you. He went down the whole extended spring roster. He's been watching."
