Guthrie on a frustrating loss and season

After he took another loss, his 15th, and another vs. Boston, his third this year, Jeremy Guthrie talked at length about his season. He was asked if the season has been a huge disappointment for him?

Jeremy Guthrie talks with the media about his struggles tonight in the O's 3-1 loss

"Absolutely. I've pitched terrible. The start when I felt good, I got no breaks. Then I felt out of whack, but got no breaks. I pitched well at times, but never have pitched the way I feel like I can. "I came in with high expectations. Have I worked hard, yeah. Have I ever given up this season, no. Will I lead the team in innings, yeah, in wins, yeah, in strikeouts, yeah. Those are all important things that show that you stick around and pitch from start to finish. Will I be the last guy to be in the rotation from the start of the year, yes. "Those are positives, but overall, I have high expectations. It's been disappointing. I have three more starts. I'll work as hard for those as I have for the first three this season. Maybe I can sneak out 11, 12 wins. Make all my starts which was probably my number one goal and build off the positives that do exist." Tonight Guthrie allowed nine hits and three runs to the Sox in 5 2/3 innings. "Fastball command was terrible for me. For the most part it was up in the zone and not effective. "I have unfortunately been two pitches away the past two outings from a couple of nice starts, but they turned into losses. "A pitcher knows when his time is coming up. I had a couple of (coaching) visits in that 6th inning. Sometimes you don't need the visit, it's kind of like the red flag, this is your last hitter I'm gonna come out and not tell you but let you know. But the responsibility lies with me and I've been one pitch or one hitter short on many occasions this year." Guthrie falls to 0-3, 7.23 in four starts this year vs. Boston, which is now 14-2 on the season vs. the O's. "They have absolutely had my number and our teams number for three years. Every team has talent, but you have to get the over the hump to play well vs. a good team. I haven't held up my end."
