The Orioles had a press conference today at Camden Yards with their minor league award winners, who will be recognized during a pregame ceremony. Here are some of their comments.
Player of the Year Henry Urrutia, through interpreter O's batting practice pitcher Rudy Arias:
"This was a big surprise because he played with a lot of good players, and this was a surprise for him. He worked as hard as he could to get to the big leagues.
"He did have expectations of getting to the big leagues (this season). He knew he would be playing with the best players in the world, and that is what he tried to accomplish. I still have to work at everything and can get better."
Pitcher of the Year Mike Wright:
"I feel like I definitely took a big step forward this year. I felt like, even when I had a bad outing, I didn't let it carry over and was more consistent.
"This was a little bit of a surprise. I definitely wanted it. It's good for my name to be thrown around with the Gausmans (Kevin Gausman), Eduardos (Eduardo Rodriguez), Bundys (Dylan Bundy) and guys like that. A good surprise."
Community Service award winner Anthony Caronia:
"When I found out about this, it was definitely humbling. To be able to have the platform we have as minor leaguers, to give back is important. A lot of people did a lot of community service so getting this award means a lot."
Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development award winner Gary Kendall:
"This award is very humbling. It's been given out for many years, and whoever receives these awards, what it comes down to is makeup. It is not easy what we do sometimes with long hours, and you don't know if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But this is one of those moments you realize how good the game has been to you.
"Going to Arizona (to manage in the Arizona Fall League) is important, not just for myself but to work with some of the players going out there, so it's quite an honor."
Carolina League Trainer of the Year Pat Wesley:
"It is humbling that your peers would vote for you. Time away from our families is tough. Like to thank my wife who takes care of three kids while I'm gone. It is a neat thing to receive this award."
Jim Russo Scout of the Year award winner Dave Jennings:
"Some of the guys I've signed make the scout. Guys like Matt Wieters, (Nick) Markakis, Kevin Gausman, (Xavier) Avery, Adam Loewen from the past. Those guys make the scouts look good."
