Orioles manager Buck Showalter was impressed with Tyler Wilson, who made his first major league start today in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the White Sox. Showalter won't need to make a roster move prior to Game 2 because the right-hander lasted six innings.
"Good, good," Showalter said following a 3-2 loss. "Another young guy who presented himself real well. Gave us a chance to win. Just matched up against one of the best pitchers in baseball.
"(Chris) Sale had everything going today. He got kind of ambushed earlier last outing. We knew he was going to come out showing ... You see so much more than a left-hander who throws real hard. The changeup early and a lot of breaking balls. We were fortunate we stretched him out far enough that we could make a run there at the end. But Tyler was really good. I thought Chaz (Roe) threw the ball well, too."
Roe tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings and hasn't allowed a run in five innings over three appearances. However, Tommy Hunter surrendered a run in the ninth that proved costly when Chris Davis hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning.
"Those tack-ons are always ... ," Showalter said. "I felt confident that we were going to make a run at them at some point, but those tack-ons ... Of course, they might have pitched the ninth inning differently if it wasn't a three-run lead, so there are a lot of what-ifs there."
Wilson didn't let the magnitude of the day get inside his head.
"That's one thing I told you all before the game that wasn't gonna be an issue, I didn't think," Showalter said. "He's letting it rip. He's done that his whole life. You go back to his sophomore year in high school. And this is a kid that winning and competitiveness have followed him around. That's not going to change.
"It's a tough, sticky day. He's one of the better conditioned pitchers we have and he was a good guy to be called on and now we've got another young guy (Mike Wright) in the second game that we'd like to win."
The Orioles had a reliever here in case a roster move was needed between games.
"I'm getting ready to talk to our guys," Showalter said. "We have some contingencies if we want to go there, but Tyler gave us six innings that we were in need of to keep us from doing that. I think right now my educated guess is it's more about probably after today and see where we are."
Showalter didn't have much to say about Manny Machado's ejection to close the eighth. Machado slammed his bat to the ground after plate umpire Toby Basner refused to grant an appeal on the checked swing.
"Manny just reacted to a checked swing," Showalter said. "Wanted him to check and he didn't and reacted strong enough to get thrown out of the game. You all saw it."
Davis hit his third home run in two days.
"We're hoping for four in two days," Showalter said. "I don't think he struck out today. Against Chris Sale, that's saying something.
"Chris, a couple adjustments he's made, but he's been doing that for a long time. I'm glad to see it. It would mean a lot for us for him to get it going for a while."
I wrote in the last entry that Wei-Yin Chen will start Saturday against the Rays at Camden Yards. He got through today's bullpen session without any issues.
Showalter wouldn't specify where Chen was sore, but it's not related to his arm.
"He just had some soreness in an area we wanted to check out before we committed there and before we did some things with (T.J.) McFarland and some other guys. But he feels good. He's ready to go Saturday," Showalter said.
The White Sox optioned right-hander Scott Carroll to Triple-A and called up Game 2 starter Chris Beck.
