O's game blog: Wilson on his Game 1 start and Wright on the mound for Game 2

Tyler Wilson pitched well but took the loss in Game 1 of the doubleheader. He talked about his outing, going six innings and allowing five hits and two runs against Chicago in his first major league start.

"I felt pretty good," Wilson said. "Felt like I commanded the zone with all pitches today. Biggest takeway was walking the leadoff guy in the sixth inning, can't happen. They executed a hit and run well and (Adam) LaRoche hit a 2-0 changeup that just got out of the reach of Adam (Jones). That was the game right there, and I have to be better to start the inning off."

He was not making his first major league appearance, but it was his first as a starter. That provided a comfort level for him today.

"Definitely. There is an advantage to having the routine and doing the same things. That helps (the earlier games). Any type of in-game experience, spring training, up here, down in Miami. It was beneficial," he said. "It was my first start, but I feel like I know the guys well and they welcomed me. Just wanted to give us a chance to win.

"Starting, actually, you have a little more time to think about the game and how to plan for each guy. I had the full hour before the game, going through my routine and stretching. And bullpen, to kind of calm all my emotions and get locked in on the glove."

He was the 26th man on the roster, a player the Orioles could add for today's doubleheader, but he also knew that meant he would have to head back to the minors after today's games.

"I honestly didn't think it about it too much. My job was to deliver a quality start and give our team a chance to win and eat some innings," he said.

Wilson matched Chris Sale for five innings today as he pitched opposite one of the best pitchers in the American League.

"That doesn't change my approach," he said. "I just focused on my job, trying to get deep into that game. They played great defense behind me. Everth (Cabrera) made a couple of really good plays and Adam, that was as good as it gets out there (in center field). I was excited to be a part of it."

Now the Orioles at 21-24 need a win in the second game to split the twin bill. On the mound in Game 2, it's right-hander Mike Wright (1-0, 0.00 ERA) against right-hander Chris Beck, who is making his major league debut.

Wright has made a pair of scoreless starts to begin his career, going 7 1/3 against the Angels and seven against the Marlins in Miami.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last Orioles pitcher with at least 14 1/3 scoreless innings to start a MLB career was Dave Ford in September 1978. Ford began his career with 15 scoreless.

In six starts for Triple-A Norfolk, Wright was 3-0 with a 2.64 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Over his last 13 starts with the Tides since July 25, 2014, he was 7-2 with a 1.62 ERA prior to his recall.
