NORFOLK, Va. - The Orioles are scheduled to play the Norfolk Tides, their Triple-A affiliate, here today at Norfolk's Harbor Park. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m.
At this hour a light rain is falling and the tarp is on the field, but the Orioles are on their way here and they will try to get this game in. The forecast looks a little better as the day goes on in the Norfolk area.
The Tides have sold around 9,000 tickets for the game. It would have been even more and a possible sellout had the weather cooperated.
Suk-min Yoon, the Korean right-hander, is the listed O's starter today with Mike Wright also scheduled to pitch for Baltimore.
Right-hander Tyler Wilson is listed as Norfolk's starter with Zach Davies and Jake Pettit also scheduled to go for Norfolk. All three pitchers were listed on the Double-A Bowie roster on yesterday's break-camp minor league rosters.
Yoon, who is expected to begin the season in the Norfolk rotation, has pitched in two O's exhibition games. Over three innings, he's allowed two hits and one run with no walks and one strikeout. He was optioned to Triple-A on March 19.
Wilson was the O's 10th round pick in the 2011 draft out of the University of Virginia. In 2013 he went 8-6 with a 4.09 ERA between Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie.
This is the fourth time the O's have played here. The Orioles beat the Nationals 6-5 in 2007 in front of 12,408 and 6-3 in 2009 with 11,833 on hand. The Tides beat the O's 6-4 here in front of 8,749 fans in 2012.
O's first base coach Wayne Kirby has a homecoming of sorts today. He and his football-playing brother Terry graduated from Tabb High in Yorktown, which is 26 miles from here.
Ryan Webb's father, Hank, pitched for the Norfolk franchise from 1973-76. They were the Tidewater Tides then. Hank Webb threw a seven-inning no-hitter for the Tides against Rochester on June 7, 1974. Norfolk catcher Johnny Monell's dad, Johnny Sr. played for the Tides during the 1987 and 1990 seasons.
O's manager Buck Showalter is scheduled to hold his pregame briefing with reporters around 1 p.m. and I'll pass along any news and notes we get from that interview.
