Machado goes 0-for-3 in All-Star Game (Britton saves AL's 4-2 win)

The only Orioles starter in tonight's All-Star Game in San Diego, third baseman Manny Machado went 0-for-3 before the Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson replaced him.

Machado swung at the first pitch from National League starter Johnny Cueto in the first inning and flied to shallow left field. He also swung at the first pitch from the Marlins' Jose Fernandez in the third inning and grounded to third base.

Facing the Braves' Julio Teheran to lead off the fifth, Machado flied to the left field warning track after fouling off the first pitch, swinging through the second and taking a pitch outside for a ball to run the count to 1-2.

In the top of the fifth tonight, Machado cut across the infield to field Nolan Arenado's ground ball and throw to second base for the force. Manny being Manny.

In his finest moment of the night, Machado stood up to cancer for former public relations director Monica Barlow, her name written on the sign he held in front of the dugout as Major League Baseball continued the fight.

Matt Wieters is catching the Royals' Kelvin Herrera in the top of the sixth inning. Mark Trumbo also has entered the game in left field.

Wieters pounced on Adam Duvall's nubber in front of the plate and threw to first for the out.

Relievers Zach Britton and Brad Brach remain in the AL bullpen.

Update: Wieters struck out on a 98 mph fastball from the Nationals' Max Scherzer to end the sixth.

Update II: Trumbo, facing the Cubs' Jon Lester to lead off the bottom of the seventh, reached on an error by Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager.

Update III: Wieters struck out again to end the eighth, going down on three pitches from the Dodgers' Kenley Jansen.

Britton has entered the game in the ninth trying to protect a 4-2 lead.

Update IV: Britton got the save in the American League's 4-2 victory.

Britton is the first Oriole to record an All-Star Game save since Don Aase in 1986.

The Nationals' Daniel Murphy grounded a single into center field on the eighth pitch, but the Diamondback's Paul Goldschmidt bounced to the mound for a force at second base and the Rockies' Nolan Arenado grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to give the American League home-field advantage in the World Series.

Brach didn't pitch tonight. Machado went 0-for-3, Wieters 0-for-2 and Trumbo 0-for-1 after reaching on an error.
