Machado homers again and Hardy extends streak (O's lose 2-1)

PHILADELPHIA - It didn't take long for the Orioles to take another lead against the Phillies.

Manny Machado launched Sean O'Sullivan's fifth pitch of today's game over the right field wall for his third leadoff home run of the season.

The Orioles have hit four leadoff home runs this season, including Alejandro De Aza's shot against the Blue Jays on April 11.

In case you're wondering, Brady Anderson hit 12 leadoff homers in 1996. Machado has some serious chasing to do, but he's got time.

Chris Parmelee walked with one out, which seems like a sound strategy for a guy with three home runs in the last two days.

J.J. Hardy doubled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. He's collected 15 hits in his last 38 at-bats to raise his average to .248.

"We knew with J.J. it was going to take a little time, but you can tell he looks a lot more hitterish up there," said manager Buck Showalter. "He looks better. You can tell, even in his facial expressions.

"He likes being an all-around guy and he will be. He's had a pretty good approach."

Meanwhile, Adam Jones is expected to return to the Orioles lineup Friday night in Toronto.

Jones will do some throwing to test his sore right shoulder before Showalter writes his name in the lineup.

"The good thing is he's getting better every day," Showalter said. "There are certain things he can do with range of motion. With a short turnaround from last night to today ... We've got a big turnaround between today and tomorrow night, so we'll see what that brings. But we like where it's headed. It's not stagnant. He's getting better every day.

"We don't want to go out there and start throwing and doing some things that might set him back. I think he'll throw tomorrow and see if he's available. That's really the one thing I'm concerned about. Swinging and everything, should be OK."

Jones hadn't missed three straight games since September 2011. He doesn't figure to extend the streak in Toronto.

"We'll know by about 3 or 4 o'clock tomorrow," Showalter said. "I'm not going to decide anything until then."

Jones has hit 13 home runs at Rogers Centre, the most in any opposing ballpark.

Showalter said he still hasn't discussed having Matt Wieters catch on back-to-back days. He likes the current arrangement.

Update: Bud Norris carried a shutout into the sixth before Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer with two outs to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead - their first in four games against the Orioles.

Norris retired the side only once in six innings. He allowed two runs and five hits, walked two and struck out two. He came out for a pinch-hitter after 84 pitches (57 strikes).

The Orioles put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, but Machado and Travis Snider struck out. Snider has fanned four times today.

Update II: The Orioles couldn't rally against Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning and absorbed a 2-1 loss.

The Orioles are 34-32 after their third loss in 14 games. The Phillies had lost nine in a row.
