TAMPA - Miguel Gonzalez entered this game with an ERA of 22.24 and exited with one of 14.90.
Progress? Did he need a solid outing tonight and get one?
"I think we all do," he said outside the Orioles clubhouse. "At some point, you want to feel confidence going towards the season. You know we have a couple more days. It is definitely good to have this type of outing. Our offense and our defense did a really good job today. I was just focused out there. Not trying to do too much. And Caleb (Joseph) called a great game. That was basically it."
Gonzalez allowed four hits and two runs over four innings, throwing 55 pitches, 34 for strikes. He allowed two runs in the second, but none in the other three innings. It was his longest of four spring starts.
"Just staying within myself," he said. "Not trying to do too much. Last outing I was flying open and just thinking too much. I think that was the difference from last and today."
Gonzalez, who recorded a pair of 1-2-3 innings, had allowed 18 hits and 14 runs in 5 2/3 innings over three earlier starts. Was his stuff simply better tonight?
"No. I felt my stuff was good," he said. "It's been good. Sometimes the game doesn't go your way. Guys have to keep working and doing what we're doing.
"You want to keep going and finish strong. The next start work hard again and keep doing what we're doing and we're going to be OK. We're been playing the Oriole way lately."
The O's lead grew to 10-2 in the seventh when Dariel Alvarez drove in a run and a second run scored on a wild pitch. Manny Machado's fourth RBI on a single in the sixth had made it 8-2.
Dylan Bundy pitched a 1-2-3 last of the fifth. He has pitched four innings without allowing an earned run over his last three games.
