Trumbo homers, Miguel Gonzalez has solid outing against New York (O's lead 11-2)

TAMPA - The Orioles struck quickly tonight against New York left-hander CC Sabathia. Mark Trumbo, batting fourth, hit a three-run homer to give the O's a 4-0 lead in the opening inning.

The first four batters reached. Joey Rickard doubled to left off the glove of third baseman Rob Refsnyder, then Jonathan Schoop hit a grounder to short. Didi Gregorius tried to get Rickard running for third, but his throw was late leaving runners on the corners.

New York got two runs back in the last of the second off Miguel Gonzalez, who began tonight with an ERA of 22.24. Gonzalez allowed three hits and walk in that frame after pitching a 1-2-3 first inning. He walked leadoff batter Mark Teixeira, who went to third on Dustin Ackley's one-out double. With two outs, Gregorius looped a single into short right field and two runs scored. In 5 2/3 innings this spring coming into tonight, Gonzalez had allowed 18 hits and 14 runs.

The O's lead 4-2 tonight after two and a half innings.

Earlier today, the Orioles held their annual talent show. According to manager Buck Showalter, it was quite a show.

"Gets better every year," Showalter said. "Had a real good emcee. Nothing was off limits. (T.J.) McFarland just about made the club one year with his. ... As a Rule 5 guy, we didn't know what his confidence level was. What he was going to be like. You come out of that saying this guy can perform on a stage. We saw Mac do his Mike Ditka impression and other things. We said 'Wow.' Very entertaining today."

The Orioles are 4-2-1 over their last seven games and are 4-12-3 overall.

Update: The O's knocked Sabathia out during a three-run fourth that produced a 7-2 lead. Machado came through with a two-out, two-run bases-loaded single and Trumbo added a run-scoring single. Trumbo has four RBIs and Machado has three. Batting third and fourth, they've combined for all seven RBIs tonight.

Sabathia went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and seven runs (four earned), and throwing 63 pitches, 37 for strikes.

Gonzalez has solid outing: Gonzalez had a decent outing and needed it. He went four innings in his longest outing of spring, with three scoreless innings and a pair of 1-2-3 frames.

Gonzalez: 4 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 walk and 1 strikeout. He lowered his ERA from 22.24 to 14.90. He threw 63 pitches, 37 strikes.
