Miley leaves today's game with injury (O's win 2-1)

Wade Miley can't catch a break.

The much-maligned left-hander shut out the Rays today on one hit over four innings. He warmed up for the fifth and walked off the mound with head athletic trainer Richie Bancells.

Darren O'Day has been rushed into the game in his first appearance since Aug. 11. The Orioles activated him from the disabled list this morning.

Miley-Throws-White-Sidebar.jpgCorey Dickerson greeted O'Day with a home run to left field on the first pitch to break a scoreless tie.

This is an unusually early appearance for O'Day, but the entire day has been strange.

Miley registered an 8.41 ERA in eight starts with the Orioles, but he retired the first nine Rays he faced this afternoon. Mikie Mahtook led off the fourth inning with a single for Tampa Bay's only hit.

Miley hit Kevin Kiermaier, but he got a double play when Evan Longoria struck out and catcher Caleb Joseph threw out Mahtook trying to steal third base.

Brad Miller walked with two outs, but Miley raced off the mound to field Steven Souza Jr.'s comebacker and recorded the out. He slipped earlier in the inning.

Perhaps he tweaked a hamstring. The Orioles haven't provided an update.

Miley threw a couple warm-up tosses before Bancells and manager Buck Showalter walked to the mound. It wasn't long before Miley headed to the dugout with Bancells and Showalter signaled for O'Day to get ready.

Miley struck out three batters and threw 63 pitches, 39 for strikes. Twenty-six pitches came in the fourth inning.

The Orioles stranded five runners in the first three innings against Jake Odorizzi.

This entry will be updated.

Update: Miley left the game with upper back cramps.

Update II: Manny Machado led off the sixth with his career-high 36th home run to tie the game.

The Rays loaded the bases agaisnt rookie Donnie Hart with one out in the top of the sixth, but Dickerson grounded into a double play.

Update III: Mark Trumbo homered off Ryan Garton with one out in the eighth inning, his 43rd, and the Orioles lead 2-1. Trumbo has a career-high 101 RBIs.

Update IV: Britton survived a leadoff single in the ninth and the Orioles defeated the Rays 2-1 to gain a split of the four-game series.

Britton has 45 saves after stranding the tying run at second base. Brad Brach notched his 10th win with a scoreless eighth.

The Orioles are 82-67 and waiting for the Red Sox to show up for a four-game series.
