Nats select left-hander Jesus Luzardo (updated through 10th round)

With the 94th pick in the third round of the First-Year Player Draft, the Nationals selected left-hander Jesus Luzardo out of Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

The southpaw underwent successful Tommy John surgery in March, according to Baseball America.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews. His fastball was around 90 to 93 mph and touched 97 mph.

A frontline left-handed starter is always a coveted proposition in the majors, especially one that can touch 97 mph. He also has a three-month head start on recovery from Tommy John. The Nationals have great confidence in their past selections of draft picks that underwent the procedure, including recent top selections Erick Fedde and Lucas Giolito.

Luzardo was rated the No. 45 draft prospect per Baseball America. MLB.com had him rated as the No. 77 prospect.

Update: In the fourth round, the Nationals selected left-handed hitting outfielder Nick Banks out of Texas A&M. In the fifth, they grabbed New Mexico State center fielder Daniel Johnson, also a lefty hitter. In the sixth round, they selected catcher Tres Berrera out of Texas.

In the seventh round, the Nationals selected second baseman Jake Noll of Florida State University, who was the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. Right-hander A.J. Bogucki of North Carolina was taken by the Nats in the eighth round. With their ninth-round pick, the Nats chose catcher Joseph Harris of Gonzaga.

Shortstop Paul Paniccione out of Grand Canyon University was the Nats' 10th-round selection.

Through the two days of the draft, the Nationals have selected two right-handers, one left-hander, two catchers, two outfielders and four infielders. Of the 11 selections, two came from the prep ranks and nine from four-year universities.
