Nick Johnson had a cortisone injection in his sore right wrist. He remains in Sarasota and isn't close to coming off the 15-day disabled list.
Johnson eventually could be moved to the 60-day DL to create room on the 40-man roster if the Orioles determine that he's going to be sidelined for an extended period.
Asked whether Johnson and Jim Thome, a full-time designated hitter, can co-exist on this team, manager Buck Showalter replied, "Let's get Nick healthy first. We can always figure out a way."
Brian Roberts still hasn't decided on a course of action for his hip injury. Showalter said Roberts is mulling three options, including season-ending surgery.
Miguel Gonzalez is scheduled to start on Monday, "barring some trades or if we activate (Kevin) Gausman," Showalter quipped.
Gausman is here and the Orioles have scheduled a 6 p.m. press conference with executive vice president Dan Duquette and scouting director Gary Rajsich. They're hoping to have an agreement in place with Gausman so he also can attend.
UPDATE: Gausman is officially an Oriole. He just tweeted the following:
So much for staying at LSU. Zach Britton is expected to start on Tuesday, but Showalter indicated that Dana Eveland also is a candidate. Taylor Teagarden is catching tonight at Single-A Delmarva. He could be activated before tomorrow's game. "We'll see where he is after he gets through that," Showalter said. Reliever Stu Pomeranz is expected to begin an injury-rehab assignment on Sunday. He's been on the disabled list with a torn oblique muscle. Showalter and his wife attended a Delmarva game during the break. Let's just say he isn't a big fan of driving across the Bay Bridge, especially at night. Endy Chavez, who played three games with the Shorebirds on his rehab assignment, also found the bridge experience to be unsettling.Happy to be the newest member of the Baltimore Orioles organization!!! Living my dream!! #GoBirds!
