Norris trying to rebound from four-run first inning (updated)

Bud Norris threw 36 pitches today in the top of the first inning. Kevin Gausman stood up in the bullpen and began to get loose.

This isn't how the Orioles wanted to start their first home game of 2015.

Norris was charged with four runs and four hits, with one walk and a throwing error. Gausman sat down as Justin Smoak bounced out to end the inning. Norris lowered his head and walked briskly to the dugout.

Adam Jones lined a home run into the left field seats with two outs in the bottom of the first to reduce the Blue Jays' lead to 4-1. Jones is 12-for-32 (.375) with two home runs and six RBIs lifetime against Mark Buehrle.

Earlier today, manager Buck Showalter talked about how he didn't want first pitch to quickly be followed by a rain delay because it could force the starting pitcher out of the game.

Norris labored to get through the first, allowing three straight hits to open the game, including Jose Bautista's RBI single to right. Bautista was 1-for-13 against Norris before today.

Jose Reyes led off with a single, making him 11-for-29 (.379) against Norris. Dalton Pompey doubled and Reyes scored on Bautista's bouncer through the right side.

Pompey scored on Edwin Encarnacion's fly ball, Norris made an errant pickoff throw, Josh Donaldson walked and Dioner Navarro lined a two-run double to left field.

Donaldson was greeted by boos, fans remembering his dust-up with Manny Machado last summer.

Machado made a nice play to retire Kevin Pillar and close the inning, and Norris retired the Jays in order in the second on only 10 pitches.

The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the second on singles by Travis Snider and Jonathan Schoop and a walk to Caleb Joseph, but Everth Cabrera lined to right field.

Hall of Famer Jim Palmer threw out the ceremonial first pitch to 1983 World Series Most Valuable Player Rick Dempsey. Same high leg kick.

The Orioles presented a check for $50,000 to Autism Speaks in Palmer's honor. He also received a huge cake shaped like a baseball glove with his photo inside.

Update: Norris didn't record an out in the fourth and left with the bases loaded. All three inherited runners scored.

Norris is charged with eight runs and seven hits in three-plus innings, with one walk, one strikeout and a hit batter. He threw 66 pitches, 45 for strikes.

Brad Brach allowed two runs of his own, as the Blue Jays built a 10-1 lead.

The eight runs off Norris were the most he allowed since July 20, 2012 with the Astros.

Brach has allowed four runs and seven hits in two innings over three appearances.
