Notes from Bowie on Hammel's start, Joseph's award, Alvarez and more

BOWIE, Md. - Jason Hammel will make a major league rehab start tonight for the Double-A Bowie Baysox against the Binghamton Mets at 7:05 p.m. in the final home game of the regular season at Prince George's Stadium. Hammel last pitched for the Orioles when he went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs July 28 versus Boston. He has been on the disabled list with a right flexor mass strain. He is expected to go three innings tonight. If he still needs to reach his 45-to-50 pitch limit after three innings, he will likely do that in the bullpen. Bowie's Caleb Joseph today was named an Eastern League end-of-season All-Star as a utility player. Joseph leads the league in total bases (242), is second in RBIs (94) and hits (148), fourth in extra base hits (52) and tied for fourth in home runs (20). He leads the Baysox in batting, homers, RBIs, hits, doubles and total bases. "They only have 10 or so players on that team and so it's an honor and it feels really nice to be recognized," Joseph, who is batting .350 this month, said. "I'm happy to be playing well in August and wanted to finish strong." Joseph is the first Baysox player to be named to the season-ending All-Star team since Joel Guzman and Ryan Adams in 2010. Bowie outfielder Kyle Hudson will miss the remaining six Baysox games due to a stress fracture right above his right ankle. "I told him today I didn't feel comfortable playing him," Baysox manager Gary Kendall said. "The doctor said there was only a 10 percent chance that it could break, but I'd hate to have something happen to him at the end of the season that would keep him from signing with us or someone else next year." In 103 games with Bowie, Hudson is bating .292 with no homers, 33 RBIs and 26 steals. Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez will make his fourth start for Bowie tonight, batting eighth as the right fielder. After batting .436 with two doubles, two homers and seven RBIs in 10 games with Single-A Frederick, Alvarez is 0-for-11 in his first three Baysox games. But Kendall has already seen a few examples of the tools that led the O's to sign the 24-year-old Alvarez last month. "I see a kid who is very athletic and has a tremendous arm in the outfield - well above average," Kendall said. "See a guy who has tools and the ball really comes off his bat. He needs innings and he needs instruction, but when you see the ball come off his bat and the way he throws, you see those tools that development people are looking for." The Baysox at 68-68, are a 1/2 game back of third-place Richmond and four games behind second place Erie and the second place team will get a playoff berth. But they have just six games left. They play the final five games at Erie starting with a doubleheader tomorrow night.
