Notes and quotes following the Orioles' latest loss

The Orioles 2018 season is certainly one for the ages and not in a good way. As the Orioles are charging toward a team record for losses and approaching all-time records, they are looking terrible in doing so.

Last night they allowed 10 runs in the third inning and trailed 10-0. Their offense went 1-for-28 with a single. They were shutout for the 13th time. They now have their eighth losing streak of the year of at least six games. Oakland had 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position and the Orioles had zero. But other than that.....

The Orioles were held to their fewest hits in a game, one, since they were no-hit at Seattle on Aug. 12, 2015 by Hisashi Iwakuma. The last time they had one hit in a game was Sept. 22, 2014 at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles were recently swept three straight by Kansas City and outscored 23-7. They were outscored 32-10 and looked terrible at Tampa Bay. Last night they allowed 10 or more runs for third time in five games and have yielded 45 runs in those contests.

They have lost six in a row, 10 of 11, 18 of 22 and 25 of their last 31 games since Aug. 8. They are 8-76 when scoring three runs or less and 4-55 when producing two or less.

Trey Mancini stopped short of calling out the team's effort last night. It would seem that on a rebuilding team where players could make important impressions for next year's roster right now, that the Orioles would at least have more energy than they seem to be playing with right now. It's a mystery.

"I wouldn't say I'm frustrated with the effort, but the execution is clearly not there," Mancini said after the loss. "We've only won, since the start of our road trip, one game in Seattle. That is just not going to cut it. Even if you are going through a rebuild, you don't want to go out and lose every day like we have been. So, we definitely need to step up our execution.

"You just kind of try to take a step back and use the rest of this season as a time to just lay it all on the line out there. You can do that. We're not going to make the playoffs, obviously. So, you just want to go out there and play your heart out every night. Show everybody, show Baltimore, show the organization what you can do. And, hopefully, we can do that the rest of the year."

In the last three games, with short starts by Josh Rogers and Andrew Cashner and Alex Cobb's two-inning outing, O's starters have thrown 5 1/3 combined innings allowing 14 runs. The bullpen has thrown 20 2/3 innings allowing seven runs in those games.

The Orioles staff has gone six straight games without a quality start, with a rotation ERA of 11.84. The O's have just two quality starts the past 15 games with a rotation ERA of 6.88.

The Orioles allowed all nine of the Athletics to score a run before recording an out in the third inning and it's the first time the Orioles have allowed an opponent to do this in team history.

Cashner was handed his 15th loss. That is one shy of his career-high of 16, set back in 2015 with San Diego. The 15 defeats are tied for the most on the Orioles (with Cobb) and tied for the second-most in the majors.

Oakland recorded the 35th one-hitter in team history that dates to 1968 and the 17th combined one-hitter. It was the A's first one-hitter since June 11, 2015 when Scott Kazmir and Evan Scribner combined to toss one versus Texas.

The A's have won six in a row and eight of their last nine games and are 43-28 on the road. Oakland is 65-0 when leading after seven innings and 20-8 against the AL East. Matt Olson's third inning home run was the A's 200th of the season, the sixth time in Athletics history with at least 200.
