Orioles have hit, but no lead (O's lose 1-0)

The Orioles won't be no-hit tonight. Whether they win the game is another matter. Ryan Flaherty singled to center field with two outs in the sixth to break up Brandon Workman's no-hit bid. The Orioles' only baserunner had been Nelson Cruz, who walked with one out in the fifth and was doubled off first base on J.J. Hardy's pop up to second baseman Dustin Pedroia. Did he forget the number of outs? Overestimate his speed in getting back to first base? Flaherty committed an error with two outs in the top of the sixth by dropping Grady Sizemore's fly ball near the right field line. He called for the ball, then slowed up and glanced at Nick Markakis before attempting an over-the-shoulder catch. Flaherty atoned for his mistake with the single. How many times have we seen it happen? Guy makes an error, then leads off the next inning and breaks up a no-hitter. Chris Tillman held the Red Sox to one run over six innings, with seven hits, three walks, three strikeouts and two rain delays. He threw 100 pitches, including 61 strikes. Jonathan Herrera did Tillman a huge favor by swinging at the first pitch after Flaherty's error. Tillman needed a quality start, even twice interrupted, after failing to record an out in the second inning in his previous outing against the Rangers. Ryan Webb retired the Red Sox in order in the seventh, and Brian Matusz is warming in the bullpen. David Ortiz will lead off the eighth, and he's 1-for-20 with 12 strikeouts lifetime against Matusz. Tonight's attendance: 24,184 Update: The Orioles were shut out for the fifth time this season, losing to the Red Sox 1-0 at Camden Yards. Former Oriole Koji Uehara earned his 13th save after surrendering a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Steve Pearce. Ryan Flaherty bunted into a force at second base and Nick Markakis and Manny Machado struck out. The Orioles were held to two hits. They're 12-10 in one-run games. Matusz struck out Ortiz in the eighth. He tossed two scoreless innings, with Boston's hitters pretty much using every inch of the ballpark. Some really deep fly balls, but they count as outs. Nolan Reimold went 1-for-3 with a single and strikeout at Double-A Bowie.
