Orioles rally to beat Boston, finish 2013 season 85-77

On the final day of the season, the Orioles fell behind Boston 5-0 in the fourth inning. But they came back with seven straight runs to win 7-6, ending the 2013 season with a 85-77 record. Nate McLouth and J.J. Hardy had two-run doubles during a five-run fifth inning as the O's tied the game 5-5. They went ahead with a two-run sixth as Jonathan Schoop scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and took a 7-5 lead on a Ryan Flaherty RBI double. Chris Davis left today's game in the top of the fourth when he suffered a sprained left wrist reaching for a throw near the first base bag. Davis, who was named the Most Valuable Oriole earlier today, ends the season batting .286 with 42 doubles, a triple, 53 homers, 138 RBIs and a 1.003 OPS. Jim Johnson pitched the ninth and allowed a run, but he recorded his 50th save a year after he recorded 51 saves. Today's attendance of 44,230 was the seventh sellout of the year. The Orioles' final season attendance of 2,357,101 is the largest since 2005. The Orioles averaged 29,100 fans per game this year, up from 26,611 in 2012. Chris Tillman gave up four early runs today and for the fourth start in a row, failed to pick up his 17th win. He gets a no-decision, allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings. He was trying to become the O's first 17-game winner since Mike Mussina won 18 in 1999. Tillman finishes at 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 206 1/3 innings. He picked up a win in just two of his last 11 starts. The Orioles committed one error today and finished with just 54 to break the major league record for fewest in a 162-game season, which was set when the Seattle Mariners made 65 in 2003. The O's finished the season with a MLB-best .991 fielding percentage, which is the best in baseball history, topping the 2007 Colorado Rockies .989 mark. The Orioles finished the season going 11-8 against Boston. They were 46-35 at home, 32-34 after the All-Star break and 36-40 against the AL East. They will open the 2014 season right here against the same team, hosting Boston next March 31.
