Orioles use three homers to take Game 1 at Fenway, 6-5

Robert Andino, Nolan Reimold and J.J. Hardy homered as the Orioles beat the Red Sox 6-5 in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park. The struggling Sox saw their lead for the wild card berth over idle Tampa fall to a game and a half. Boston has lost 10 of its last 12 games and is 4-14 in September. Matt Angle's two-run double in the third gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead and gave Angle his first career multi-RBI game.

Andino's two-run shot two innings later was followed by Reimold's third homer in five games and that solo shot made it a 5-1 lead. Hardy added a solo homer in the fifth. It's his second homer in three games and 14th in his past 49 contests. Hardy adds to his new career-high and now has hit 28 on the year. The Orioles have hit 11 homers in the last five games. Jeremy Guthrie was the winning pitcher, giving up 10 hits and four runs over six innings. He improves to 9-17 with an ERA of 4.28. Over his last three starts, Guthrie is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.70. Guthrie has now pitched 202 innings on the year, reaching the 200 mark for the third straight year. Boston cut a 6-2 deficit to 6-5 on an Adrian Gonzalez single in the last of the seventh, but Clay Rapada, Pedro Strop and Jim Johnson combined to get the last six outs to hold the lead. Johnson picked up his seventh save in the ninth on just seven pitches. The Orioles picked up their first win on the year in six tries at Fenway Park and improve to 4-8 against Boston and 24-42 in American League East games. With the win, the Orioles fifth in six games and eighth in the last 12 games, the Orioles are 63-89. They are 16-12 since Aug. 22, 9-9 in September and will avoid a 100-loss season by picking up win No. 63. In tonight's game at Fenway Park, Brian Matusz (1-7, 9.84) pitches for the Orioles against John Lackey (12-12, 6.19).
