Orioles complete two-game sweep of Padres

SAN DIEGO - The Orioles tied a home run record for the month of June, completed a two-game series sweep of the Padres to run their winning streak to seven games and increased their margin to 5 ½ in the American League East.

Not a bad way to spend a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Yovani Gallardo took a shutout into the sixth and collected two hits in a 12-6 victory over the Padres at Petco Park. He didn't allow a hit until the fifth and the only real mistake resulted in Brett Wallace's three-run homer in the sixth.

Gallardo was charged with three runs and three hits in six innings, with three walks, a season-high six strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 97 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Odrisamer Despaigne worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings, but he allowed two hits and walked a batter. Brad Brach replaced him with runners on the corners and one out in the eighth and got a double play ball to escape the jam.

Brach lowered his ERA to 1.04 in 43 1/3 innings. He's stranded 16 of 17 inherited runners.

Oliver Drake pitched the bottom of the ninth, working back-to-back games, and allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning. He could be optioned on Thursday to make room for Vance Worley.

The Orioles outscored the Padres 23-13 in the two-game series. They've registered their third seven-game winning streak of the season.

The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth against left-hander Ryan Buchter. Manny Machado drove in two runs with a ground-rule double to increase the lead to 9-3.

Machado also had an RBI single in the fourth and is batting .332.

Mark Trumbo had a ground-rule double with one out to give the Orioles an 11-3 lead. Trumbo had four RBIs today, giving him 60 on the season.

The final run scored on Joey Rickard's fielder's choice grounder, as the Orioles sent 10 batters to the plate. They've scored in double figures in three consecutive games and four of the last 10.

Trumbo's two-run shot in the fourth gave him 23 home runs, tops in the majors, and allowed the Orioles to tie the 1996 Athletics for most in the month of June with 55. They have one game remaining to break the record, taking their traveling power show to Seattle.

Jonathan Schoop doubled twice while extending his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his season high. Adam Jones' RBI single in the sixth gave him a season-high 10-game hitting streak, and he singled again in the ninth.

Jones has 27 RBIs in June, his highest total for any month, according to ESPN Stats & Info. He's 18-for-44 (.409) during his streak.

Gallardo's fastball was topping at 92 mph again today, a significant increase since he came off the disabled list. He's allowed eight runs and 15 hits in 16 1/3 innings in three starts since the Orioles activated him.

Gallardo lined a single into left field in the fifth inning and looped a broken-bat single into right field in the sixth, becoming the first Orioles pitcher with a two-hit game since Zach Britton in 2011.

The Orioles lead the Red Sox and Blue Jays by 5 ½ games in the AL East. They're 47-30 overall and 16-17 on the road.

The 2014 team that reached the American League Championship Series didn't move 17 games above .500 until Aug. 8, when it was 66-49.
