Orioles no-hit by Iwakuma

The Orioles ended their nine-game road trip today by winding up on the wrong end of a historical start.

Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma no-hit the Orioles in a 3-0 victory at Safeco Field. He retired David Lough on a foul pop, Manny Machado on a grounder and Gerardo Parra on a fly ball to left-center field, and was mobbed by teammates.

Yes, they were hitless in Seattle.

Today marked the seventh no-hitter against the Orioles and the first since Clay Buchholz on Sept. 1, 2007 in Boston.

Alvarez currently serves as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez tossed the last no-hitter in the American League on Aug. 15, 2012 against the Rays.

The Orioles were challenged to get the ball out of the infield against Iwakuma, who had them chasing pitches out of the strike zone all day. He elevated his fastball and buried sliders in the dirt, and the Orioles couldn't lay off them.

Did anyone come close to getting a hit?

Manny Machado and Chris Davis walked in the fourth inning to represent the Orioles' only baserunners until Jonathan Schoop drew a leadoff walk in the eighth with the count full. Ryan Flaherty struck out looking to extend his slump to 0-for-33 and Caleb Joseph grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to leave Iwakuma's pitch count at 107.

Iwakuma had never thrown a complete game in four major league seasons.

No one had thrown a no-hitter on this date before today, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Kevin Gausman registered a quality start by definition, allowing three runs and six hits over seven innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters.

The Orioles went 4-5 on the road trip and are 57-56 heading into Thursday's off-day. Today felt like one, too.
