Pitching updates and wrapping up a 10-8 win

SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles right-hander Hunter Harvey will make his next start on Tuesday against the Twins in Fort Myers. Dylan Bundy starts Wednesday, though he probably will be hidden from the Rays in Port Charlotte.

I wrote earlier today that Gabriel Ynoa starts Sunday against the Red Sox in Sarasota.

Chris Tillman is still scheduled to throw a two-inning simulated game on Saturday and Andrew Cashner will throw a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday, if you're scoring at home.

The Orioles would like to make some cuts later today, but they may have to wait until Saturday.

"I'm trying," said manager Buck Showalter. "Dan (Duquette) and I met after the B game and came to an agreement on some names, so I think we'll see some between now and tomorrow is over, for sure.

"I'll try to get to some today, but I don't know. I'm not going to pull them out of the shower."

Manny Machado went 3-for-3 today with a double, home run and four RBIs to make him 8-for-13 this spring. The hottest start he's had in spring training?

It appears that way, but Showalter wouldn't commit to it.

"It seems like he's had some good streaks," Showalter said after a 10-8 win over the Pirates. "He's in a good place. You can tell. (Tyler) Glasnow had really good stuff. To scratch a run off him in the first inning, everybody had to dial it up a little bit.

"(Machado) is swinging it well. I wouldn't say it's any better than he has in other periods. Maybe in the spring. You may know a little better than me. I don't pay that much attention to it this time of year unless it's real, real bad."

Bundy-Distressed-White-Sidebar.jpgBundy's final line wasn't good: five runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. But Showalter said Bundy got his work in and is "right where he needs to be."

"Not there yet," Showalter said. "He's building up some arm strength. His stuff's not where it's going to be. Good hitters. I think he had three flares that are usually outs. I think we counted seven hits that fell in today that weren't well hit. Even some fly balls that went over the fence. Tough day for pitchers.

"He wasn't particularly happy with the outing. Anytime somebody crosses the plate. But I think he knows that he's going to be in our rotation and he knows where the finish line is. He's pretty mature about it. You've got to remind yourself sometimes how young he is. But we look for a little different stuff with him, make sure that there's no hangover from last year. I kind of like the fact that he's building up a little bit each time out.

"Roger (McDowell) thought he was probably 80-90 percent."

Showalter is hoping that Bundy can complete four innings in his next start.

Colby Rasmus walked and hit his first home run with the Orioles, a leadoff shot to center field in the second.

"Calm, professional," Showalter said. "There's only two guys with more major league service time in this camp. You've got to remind yourself sometimes that he's been playing over eight years in the big leagues because of how young he came up at. But I've been listening to a lot of guys talking about what a good teammate he is. It's been a pretty easy fit. He doesn't take himself too seriously and you can tell he's got a plan of what he's trying to get done each day. Throw a little harder each day, run with a little more abandon each day.

"I told him when he came here, I need him to make this club if he can and we'll give him a chance to do that. 'This is what I hope happens and it'll be up to you.' He said, 'That's all I need to hear,' and he's going to run with it."

Rasmus went on the restricted list last summer with the Rays, having left the club to be with his family. The Orioles are trusting that he's fully committed to playing baseball again. They can sense that the joy has returned. They're counting on it staying.

"I'd love to be that good of a prognosticator," Showalter said. "I can't say that I know him that well to say that, but all indications are that he seems to be happy here, but we'll see. All the feedback I'm getting is real positive."
