Prospect Purke roughed up in second start for P-Nats

Left-hander Matt Purke did not have a good outing in his second start for high Single-A Potomac on Monday night, a 12-9 loss at Winston-Salem. Purke (0-1) allowed two home runs to shortstop Chris Curley in three 2/3 innings, totaling 11 hits, nine runs, one walk, two wild pitches and three strikeouts. His ERA jumped from 1.80 to 10.38 in the loss. Purke had allowed only one run in his first start for the P-Nats on July 3, also against Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem scored two runs in the first and seven runs in the fourth. The P-Nats have lost 14 straight games at BB&T Park. It is just one loss, just like his first game is just one game. Obviously, Purke was hittable on this night. His third start will be important to monitor to see how he looks. * Tuesday at 12 noon is Lucas Giolito's second start for the Gulf Coast Nationals. Giolito is looking for a more cohesive start than his first, where he lasted only five batters. * Matt Grace pitched well and Aaron Barrett notched another save as Double-A Harrisburg edged Bowie 3-2. Grace took over for Nate Karns to go three 2/3 innings and improve to 2-1. He allowed just two hits in stark contrast to how the Baysox roughed him up last week at Prince George's Stadium in a 6-4 loss. Brian Goodwin went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and is hitting .300 last 10 games. Justin Bloxom had a two-out RBI. * Low Single-A Hagerstown Suns return to action Tuesday night against Hickory and Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs face Buffalo.
