NEW YORK - The Orioles have placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 10-day disabled list with a left hip flexor strain and recalled right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis from Triple-A Norfolk.
Another reliever was needed following last night's 14-inning game against the Yankees. The Orioles were pondering a variety of moves when alerted to the severity of Rasmus' injury.
Rasmus has been bothered by hip soreness for a while. Maybe it explains his slow start. He's 2-for-21 with 13 strikeouts.
The Orioles will work with a short bench this afternoon. Yacabonis, Darren O'Day and Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr. are the only relievers likely to be available today.
Due to the early start to the 2018 season, the Orioles couldn't bring up a player from the 40-man roster today unless someone was going on the disabled list. They would have needed to summon a non-roster player.
According to STATS, Manny Machado is the first player with four hits, two walks and two home runs in a game in New York since Mickey Mantle on Aug. 6, 1961 in a 15-inning game against the Twins. And Pedro Ãlvarez's grand slam in the 14th inning is the latest in Orioles history and the latest ever against the Yankees.
Kevin Gausman has notched 601 career strikeouts after recording three last night. Per STATS, Gausman's 131 games to reach the 600-strikeout mark rank as the third-fewest in Orioles history. Erik Bedard (110) and Daniel Cabrera (129) are first and second, respectively. Mike Mussina is fourth at 133 games and Jim Palmer is fifth at 138.
