Stunner in the Bronx: O's beat Sabathia and Yankees, 6-2

In baseball's version of a stunning upset, the Orioles beat CC Sabathia, denied him his 20th win, ended his 21-game home unbeaten streak and now have a chance to sweep the Yankees in New York for the first time in 24 years. Yes, the O's had a good night in the Bronx. Jake Arrieta allowed just two runs for his second win this year vs. the Yankees and the Birds scored three in the first off Sabathia in a 6-2 win. A victory in Wednesday's afternoon game would give the Orioles their first three-game sweep at New York since June 6-8, 1986. Sabathia allowed nine hits and six runs over 6 1/3 innings as he lost to the Orioles for just the second time ever and suffered his first home loss since last July 2nd vs. Seattle. Sabathia began the evening with a mark of 4-0, 2.73 this year vs. the O's and 13-1, 2.59 in 18 career starts vs. Baltimore. He was 16-0, 2.05 over his last 21 home starts. This was just Sabathia's third home loss in 27 Yankee starts. He falls to 19-6, 3.14 on the season. Arrieta, meanwhile, gave up just two runs and eight hits over 6 1/3, throwing 96 pitches. He is 2-0, 3.65 in two starts this year vs. the Yankees. The O's struck quickly vs. Sabathia as their first five batters reached to start the game. Ty Wigginton plated the first run with a bloop single and Adam Jones followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. In the third, Nolan Reimold hit a two-run homer into the second deck in left off Sabathia for a 5-1 lead. It was his first big league homer since May 5th - also at New York. Reimold has four homers in 39 career at bats at the new Yankee Stadium. Nick Markakis came up with an RBI single in the 7th for a 6-2 O's lead. The Yankees fall to 48-25 at home and by losing the last two nights, they have lost just their fifth series at home in 24 on the season. The O's have won four in a row, two each vs. Tampa and New York and are 5-3 in a nine-game stretch vs. the Red Sox, Rays and Yankees. They improved to 21-13 (.618) since Buck Showalter took over as manager. That is the second best mark in the AL since Showalter's first game on August 3, trailing only Minnesota's 22-10 during that stretch. In Wednesday's series wrap-up game, at 1:05 p.m., its Brad Bergesen (6-10, 5.47) vs. right-hander Ivan Nova (1-0, 2.89).
