The challenge of making room for Wei-Yin Chen

The roster moves continue for the Orioles. If you've got them memorized without taking notes, move up to the front row of the classroom.

Better yet, take over for the professor.

Wei-Yin Chen will be recalled from Single-A Frederick to make tonight's start against the Indians at Camden Yards. It's time to kick off another homestand after a three-city road trip.

The bullpen is down to seven relievers after the Orioles optioned Mychal Givens yesterday, so a position player is expected to come off the 25-man roster unless they have more starting pitcher shenanigans up their sleeve. The only apparent consideration for the disabled list is center fielder Adam Jones, who's missed seven of the last nine games with a sore right shoulder. However, it wouldn't be shocking if he returned to the lineup tonight after manager Buck Showalter told MASN's Gary Thorne yesterday that Jones was pushing to play in the series finale against the Red Sox and made a big leap forward in his recovery.

Showalter has referenced multiple "nagging injuries," but check out yesterday's lineup.

Steve Pearce started in left field, eliminating speculation that he may be hurt. Nolan Reimold started in center field and Delmon Young started in right. Chris Parmelee played first base. David Lough has been the primary center fielder in Jones' absence and he was used yesterday as a defensive replacement.

Parmelee and Young had a violent collision yesterday while chasing a fly ball down the right field line, but they stayed in the game. Parmelee flipped in the air and made a crash landing after kneeing Young in the chest. His right foot struck Young below the belt.

Given the choice, I'd take the knee to the chest any day.

Orioles.com lists Paredes as a designated hitter, but let's give the man a position. I'm going with infielder.

Anyone designated for assignment is likely to be claimed by another club. Showalter says the Orioles are trying to keep all of their pieces, but it's practically impossible.

Pearce is 11-for-35 (.314) with four doubles in 13 games this month after batting .196/.288/.314 in April and .183/.246/.400 in May.

Young is 1-for-15 in his last seven games, 4-for-27 in his last 10 and 6-for-40 in his last 13.

As I wrote last night, second baseman Jonathan Schoop came out of last night's game at Double-A Bowie after the sixth inning. He's homered in three straight games.

Is Schoop headed to Baltimore? That wasn't the team's plans before last night, I'm told, but maybe they changed. Stay tuned.

The Orioles took two of three from the Indians on June 5-7 in Cleveland. Chen faced them twice in 2014 and allowed six runs and 12 hits in 13 2/3 innings. The Orioles lost both games and the left-hander didn't get a decision.

Chen is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career starts against the Indians. The current group is 13-for-63 (.206) against him.

Michael Brantley is 3-for-8 with a double and triple. Mike Aviles is 1-for-14 with five strikeouts.

Corey Kluber is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles and 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts at Camden Yards. J.J. Hardy is 3-for-6 with a double, Ryan Flaherty is 3-for-8, Lough is 2-for-6 with a triple, Parmelee is 1-for-11 with a double and Chris Davis is 1-for-8 with a double and five strikeouts.

Right-handers are batting .211 against Kluber, but left-handers are hitting .289. Kluber has allowed 14 runs and 22 hits in the first inning in his 15 starts this season, with opponents batting .344/.391/.594 with four home runs.
