Tonight's pitching matchup in Kansas City

Yovani Gallardo's quest to record an out beyond the sixth inning continues tonight in Kansas City.

Twenty starts have passed since Gallardo's done it. He came close again Saturday night in Texas, but failed to retire the two batters he faced in the seventh as a 4-2 lead dissolved into an 8-4 loss.

Gallardo is 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in his first three starts as an Oriole, with 10 runs and 18 hits allowed over 16 innings. He's worked five, five and six innings.

Gallardo-Throws-Gray-Sidebar.jpgGallardo's never pitched at Kauffman Stadium, but he's 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two career starts against the Royals. The current group is 12-for-63 (.190) against him.

Omar Infante is 1-for-12. There's a matchup you want in the late innings.

Right-hander Chris Young is off to a horrible start since re-signing with the Royals, going 0-3 with a 7.90 ERA and 1.976 WHIP in three starts. He's allowed 12 runs and 20 hits in 13 2/3 innings, walking seven and striking out 10.

Young has worked five, 4 2/3 and four innings in his three outings.

The Orioles, who held some interest in Young over the winter, are 1-for-25 against him. Chris Davis has the only hit in three at-bats, along with an RBI and a walk. J.J. Hardy is 0-for-9 and Manny Machado is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Young is 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA in five games (four starts) versus the Orioles.

Machado has tied his career high with a 14-game hitting streak. He leads the majors with 24 hits and a .407 average.

Reliever Darren O'Day extended his scoreless streak last night to eight appearances and 7 1/3 innings to begin the season. The Orioles are 8-0 in those games.

O'Day hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 outings and 9 2/3 innings since Oct. 1, 2015.

Closer Zach Britton recorded his 77th career save last night to surpass Randy Myers for sole possession of sixth place on the club's all-time list. Jorge Julio ranks fifth with 83.

Since the start of the 2014 season, Britton ranks third among American League relievers with 77 saves.
