As the Orioles attempt to figure out what they're going to do in right field, they seem more likely to go the platoon route to round out their lineup.
This isn't exactly breaking news. It's been a strong possibility for a while now, especially after Chris Davis accepted their seven-year, $161 million offer.
Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes came off the board. I'm still fielding questions about the possibility of bringing back Nick Markakis, but are the Braves willing to move him? And the last time I checked, they weren't looking to absorb a large chunk of his contract in any trade talks.
The Orioles let Markakis walk last winter and he signed with the Braves for $44 million over four years. I just don't see any possibility of a reunion in 2016.
Here's the list of remaining free agent right fielders, courtesy of MLBTradeRumors.com. Let me know if anyone jumps out at you as an everyday player:
Domonic Brown (28)
Marlon Byrd (38)
David DeJesus (36)
Chris Denorfia (35)
Jeff Francoeur (32)
Matt Joyce (31)
David Murphy (34)
Ryan Raburn (35)
Alex Rios (35)
Grady Sizemore (33)
Will Venable (33)
Shane Victorino (35)
Delmon Young (30)
The Orioles have warned against pigeonholing an acquisition as strictly a right fielder, but Hyun Soo Kim projects as a left fielder based on his arm. I'm not convinced that he's a consideration for right, but we'll learn a lot more about him later this month in Sarasota, Fla.
The focus is on finding a left-handed hitter. The Orioles designated L.J. Hoes for assignment on Jan. 26 because they felt like they had enough depth from the right side of the plate. It's still possible that Hoes clears waivers, stays in the organization and receives an invitation to spring training. The process needs to play out.
A left-handed hitter could platoon with Mark Trumbo, though the Orioles still seem more inclined to provide most of his at-bats as the designated hitter. And they'd most likely want to keep Trumbo in the lineup after trading for him and paying him $9.15 million in his final season before free agency.
Nolan Reimold, Dariel Alvarez and Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard also are platoon possibilities. I'd start Reimold in right if opening day arrived today, but he figures to move around the outfield.
Murphy, 34, has intrigued the Orioles in past years and most likely remains on their radar. No reason to remove him at this stage. He bats from the left side, plays all three outfield positions and is a career .278/.341/.454 hitter against right-handers.
The Orioles also like Venable, 33, and thought they had completed a trade for him over the summer before the Rangers pried him away from the Padres. He also plays all three outfield positions, with most of his experience in right, and is a career .256/.324/.422 hitter against right-handers, compared to his .222/.280/.329 slash line against lefties.
DeJesus, 36, is a career .275/.349/.412 hitter in 13 major league seasons, the on-base percentage bringing major appeal to the Orioles, but he produced a .233/.297/.330 slash line last year with the Rays and Angels. He also plays all three outfield positions and is a lifetime .283/.360/.437 hitter against right-handers.
Joyce, 31, has played all three outfield positions, though he's made only four starts in center field. No need to put him out there. Not that he's going to win a Gold Glove in either corner.
Joyce is the ultimate platoon guy, with a career .253/.348/.447 slash line against right-handers and a .180/.252/.302 slash line versus lefties. Eighty-four of his 93 home runs have been hit against right-handers.
Notes: The Babe Ruth Museum is holding its annual Babe's Birthday Bash on Friday from 5:30-9 p.m. at Pickles Pub. I'll be participating in an Orioles panel discussion at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $45 for museum members and $50 for the general public.
For more information, visit www.baseruthmuseum.org or call 410-727-1539 ext. 3033.
The Orioles will hold tryouts for ballgirls and ballboys on March 5 at noon at Camden Yards. Bring your glove and a personality.
The club is looking for, and I quote, "outgoing and athletic men and women ages 18 and older." Dress casually and enter the ballpark through Home Plate Plaza on the southwest corner. Resumes are recommended.
Complimentary parking will be provided in the A Lot, which means it's free, not that someone walks up to your car and says, 'Way to keep it between the white lines!"
Besides having the ability to field ground balls, the Orioles want their candidates to be personable, customer-service oriented and available to work the entire season. Being a platoon outfielder would be a bonus, but it's not a requirement.
Judges will include members of the front office and CBS Radio personalities Rob Long, Greg Carpenter and Regan Warfield.
Shameless plug alert: I'm joining MASN's Jim Hunter again tonight at Dempsey's Brew Pub & Restaurant for the "Hot Stove Show" that airs from 6-7 p.m. on 105.7 The Fan.
Trumbo and pitcher Chris Tillman will call into the show. We'll also hear from David Rovine, vice president of Orioles-Sarasota.
Spring training must be around the corner.
