Updates on young pitchers Voth, Mooneyham, Orlan and Silvestre

21-year-old Austin Voth made a nice jump last season from short-season Single-A Auburn to low Single-A Hagerstown. The right-handed starter Voth went a combined 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA in 11 games, striking out 55 batters in 46 1/3 innings. Voth is continuing to prepare for the 2014 campaign alongside 22 of his pitching teammates in the accelerated development program in Viera, Fla. Newly appointed Single-A Hagerstown pitching coach Sam Narron, and former Auburn pitching coach, was impressed with what he saw from the former Washington Husky. "Austin has a great idea about what he is doing up there," Narron said. "He has got maturity up there that you don't see in younger guys. His command of his fastball is impeccable. He has a very good idea with where he wants to throw it. He does thing that you don't see younger pitchers doing. "His secondary stuff improved over the offseason. Good changeup, he is pitcher in the truest sense of the word. And don't sleep on his stuff either, he can run it up there pretty good when he has to." Left-handers in camp include 23-year-old Nick Lee, 24-year-old Brett Mooneyham, 23-year-old Robert Orlan and 21-year-old Hector Silvestre. "I got to see Hector in extended (camp)," Narron said. "He is a strike thrower. The boy pumps it over the plate. For a guy that is as young as he is to throw it over the plate and not have any fear what the hitter is going to do you don't see that a lot. He is working on getting the breaking ball a little better. He has a good feel for his changeup. Lefties seem to have a little better feel for changeup for some reason or another." "Robert Orlan, coming off of Tommy John, last year was a year for him to be healthy. He didnt get to pitch at all the year before, getting drafted and getting hurt. He pitched healthy all last year. He showed up at camp ready to go. "Brett is making some adjustments with his delivery, getting better with it. He is showing flashes. I know when I had him in 2012, he really jumped off the page at you. Last year in Hagerstown he was unhittable. He ran into little adversity in Potomac, but that is to be expected for any pitcher. That is a big jump. "He has come into camp ready to learn and get a little better. We are hoping he makes some strides in the next couple of weeks."
