BOWIE, Md. - In his first game since July 10 at Boston, Vladimir Guerrero is 1-for-3 tonight here at Prince George's Stadium for the Double-A Bowie Baysox against Trenton.
He and Cesar Izturis are playing for Bowie on injury-rehab assignments. They could soon return to the Orioles, possibly as early as Tuesday at Toronto.
Guerrero grounded out to short in the fifth after he lined a single to left in the first and then lined out to right an inning later.
Guerrero is the Bowie DH and batting second tonight as he looks to make his way off the disabled list. He went on the DL on July 11 with a fractured right wrist after getting hit by a pitch in Boston in the final game before the All-Star break.
Guerrero has not been a in a minor league game since he played in the California League on May 22 and 23, 2009 for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He went 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs.
Izturis is also 1-for-3 after he lined a double down the third-base line in the fifth and scored on an Xavier Avery double to tie this game at 4-4. He grounded out in the first and second innings.
Izturis, batting first and playing shortstop, is now 1-for-9 in three rehab games, two here and the game he played in Friday in the Gulf Coast League.
Izturis has been out since May 12 and in late May had surgery to repair the ulnar nerve in his right elbow. Izturis said the elbow is now 100 percent and he can throw just fine, although a throw he made from shortstop in the top of third pulled Joe Mahoney off the first base bag for an error.
Oliver Drake is making his fifth Bowie start tonight. Through five innings, he has allowed four runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Update: Izturis was replaced at short by Pedro Florimon to start the seventh inning. He went 1-for-4 tonight with an error and is 1-for-10 in three rehab games.
He grounded out in the last of the sixth, leaving the bases loaded. He had doubled and scored in the fifth. Trenton is leading 5-4.
