Welington Castillo leaves injured, O's lose 4-3 to Toronto

TORONTO - The Orioles lost one catcher and made two errors in the bottom of the second inning tonight to trail 2-0 early on against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

It was a pretty brutal half inning.

Catcher Welington Castillo took a foul ball to the groin area during Miguel Montero's at-bat which resulted in a strikeout to end the last of the first scoreless. Castillo was looked at by trainer Brian Ebel, but joseph-swing-orange-home-far-sidebar.jpgremained in the game for that at-bat. But Caleb Joseph was catching when the Orioles took the field in the second.

Earlier this year Castillo spent 10 days on the disabled list due to a testicular injury. Castillo spent time in the emergency room May 30 after being hit in the groin by a pitch that first struck Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius and caromed. He went on the DL the next day.

The Orioles have three catchers on the expanded September roster with Castillo and Joseph joined by top prospect Chance Sisco.

As for that last of the second, Ubaldo Jiménez allowed three doubles and fell behind 2-0. It was an inning where outfielders Mark Trumbo in right and Adam Jones in center made errors.

Toronto's Teoscar Hernandez led off the inning and hit a fly ball to right. Trumbo charged in and didn't see the ball as it hit the turf fair well behind him and then bounced into foul territory. Near the stands Trumbo deflected the ball into the stands and the play was scored a double and an error on the rightfielder. He scored on a grounder for a 1-0 lead.

No. 9 hitter Darwin Barney doubled to center and took third when Jones dropped the ball as he was about to throw it back to the infield. That went as a double and an error by the centerfielder. When Richard Urena doubled to right, Barney scored for a 2-0 lead. Jiménez, who pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first, needed 51 pitches to get the first six outs.

The Orioles meanwhile, were scoreless the first three innings against right-hander Marco Estrada. They struck out five times, all five were called third strikes.

But in the fourth they got a run back. Manny Machado doubled to right and scored on a single by Jones with one out. Jones' 69th RBI made it a 2-1 game after three and a half innings.

Swap of homers: The teams exchanged solo homers. Ryan Goins hit one in the fourth for a 3-1 lead and Mark Trumbo hit No. 23 in the O's fifth to pull Baltimore within 3-2.

Castillo update: The Orioles announced that Castillo left the game with a contusion.
