Williams sets pitching rotation for remainder of season

The Nationals postponed Wednesday night's game because of rain. The game has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Thursday with the first game at 1:05 p.m. and the second game at 7:05 p.m. Blake Treinen will start Game 1 and Gio Gonzalez will start Game 2. Taylor Hill and Doug Fister will be the starters Friday. Strasburg-throws-gray.pngStephen Strasburg starts Saturday and Jordan Zimmermann will start Sunday. In terms of the order for the postseason, it has not been officially announced, but this news makes it look like Strasburg will start Game 1 of the divisional round Friday, Zimmermann Game 2, and Fister Game 3. Fister would have 10 days of rest since his last start. Williams said it makes for a difficult schedule, but they were not going to cancel the game because they have a lot of tickets sold for the remainder of the homestand. "It's not ideal for sure, but we can't do much about the weather," Williams said. "We'll have to deal with it. It's part of the game that we play. Sometimes it's not ideal for your club. But you have to deal." Williams confirmed Ryan Zimmerman will start at least one of the games each day. He also said that the front line starters will start only one of the games each day. It amounts to four games in a 34-hour span. "We'll have to stay mindful thought that right now that we don't push guys too far either," Williams said. "We have a lot of position players here. A lot of the guys that are here are going to get the chance to play over the next two days." Williams said Hill was a good choice to start one of the games Friday because he has been pitching in Florida since the Triple-A season was completed in early September. "He's been in instructional ball," Williams said. "He's good to throw five innings, depending on pitch count. He's good to make that start. He's ready to go. He's been pitching. He was scheduled to make a start yesterday. He threw a bullpen yesterday. He'll be able to start two days from now. It's good." The 25-year-old right-hander Hill has gone 11-7 with a 2.81 ERA in 24 starts for the Syracuse Chiefs. He started the season 9-2.
