Yankee comeback in eighth sinks O's and evens series

The Orioles finally got to Ivan Nova. But the Yankees got to Kevin Gausman and Francisco Rodriguez. Down 4-3 heading to the top of the eighth, the Yankees doubled, singled and homered against Gausman to take a two-run lead and beat the Orioles 7-5 at Camden Yards. Gausman had pitched a 1-2-3 seventh but gave up an Alex Rodriguez double, Robinson Cano RBI single and Alfonso Soriano two-run homer as New York quickly scored three to take a 6-4 lead. They added a run off of Francisco Rodriguez on a Mark Reynolds RBI double to go three runs ahead. Gausman had pitched 10 shutout innings this season vs. the Yankees until they got to him in the eighth. Soriano homered twice on the night and has hit 15 homers in 43 games with New York. This was his 37th career multi-homer game. Mariano Rivera got a four-out save for New York. It was his 42nd save of the season and the 78th in his career against the Orioles. Earlier, the Orioles ended a 20-inning scoreless streak against right-hander Nova to take a 4-1 lead in the fifth. J.J. Hardy and Brian Roberts started the inning with singles off Nova. Henry Urrutia hit a slow roller towards shortstop Eduardo Nunez. Nunez threw wildly past first as a run scored on a play ruled an infield hit and error. The O's took a 2-1 lead on a Nick Markakis sac fly. Alex Rodriguez at third cut off a throw that would have produced a likely close play at the plate. Two batters later Chris Davis hit a two-run homer to right-center for a 4-1 lead. It was his 49th homer which ties Frank Robinson (49 in 1966) for second most by an Oriole. Brady Anderson tops the single-season list with 50 in 1996. Davis, who had homered just once over his last 12 games, now has 126 RBIs. But a 4-1 lead shrunk to 4-3 as Soriano and Reynolds hit solo homers in the sixth off O's starter Miguel Gonzalez who gave up six hits and three runs over six innings. With the comeback win, the Yankees pulled within a half-game of the Orioles and ended a six-game Camden Yards losing streak. The O's lead the season series, 9-8. The Orioles fall to 4-2 on this homestand, 42-31 at home, 28-30 vs. the AL East and 77-67 on the season. Game 3 of this series is Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
