ANAHEIM, Calif. - After a strong outing on Monday night in the series and road trip opener, Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy is lined up to make his next start on Saturday, pitching on the normal four days' rest.
The Orioles keep looking for ways to get Bundy extra rest and he had an extra day of rest before last night's start. Then he went out and pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs with no walks and 10 strikeouts, a new career high, on 105 pitches in beating the Angels 6-2.
Manager Buck Showalter said Bundy is lined up for now to start on Saturday at Oakland, but he wants to see how Bundy gets through a between-starts bullpen session first before locking in on that day. The Orioles are playing 10 straight days during this road trip, so there are no off-days to help Bundy get added rest.
"If there is something Roger (McDowell, pitching coach) doesn't like (in the bullpen session), you could see Chris (Tillman) come back into play there," Showalter said.
The next time Bundy gets extra rest should come after the Saturday start. With next Thursday's off-day, he could get at least one extra day of rest, if not more, and potentially start a homestand opener on Friday, Aug. 18, pitching on five days' rest.
"Every pitcher would like to get an extra day," Showalter said. "There are certain parts of the year where you really benefit from extra rest and certain parts where it is not beneficial. Kind of like the way he's been handled. He seems to be getting stronger as we go forward. The challenge is to keep it that way."
Meanwhile, we still await Tillman's debut in relief. He has made 194 major league appearances, all as a starter. But he's in the 'pen now after allowing seven runs (five earned) in two-plus innings Thursday versus Detroit. He's now gone four days without pitching in a game.
Pitching him in a lopsided game to get his feet wet would seem to be the best scenario for Showalter and the Orioles.
"That is not crystal clear," he said. "The priority is always going to be to win the game and position ourselves to win the next game. Whether we are way ahead or way behind, you are always trying to position yourself for the next game. It's not like Chris can't get people out in a close game. We might be pleasantly surprised once he gets out there. Doesn't mean he has to pitch tonight or tomorrow. I think Chris probably has a little apprehension about it, he should."
The 20-day rehab assignments at Double-A Bowie for outfielder Anthony Santander and utility man Ryan Flaherty run through Tuesday, Aug. 15. Showalter said today the soonest we could see Flaherty would be for the next series at Oakland.
"Dan (Duquette) and I were talking today about how close we thought Ryan was," Showalter said. "We think every at-bat, with the lack of activity that Santander has had, he needs to get. So I expect him to take the full time. Obviously with a day game tomorrow, the earliest we could take Ryan would be in Oakland. We'll take that day-to-day. Be interesting to see how he looks tonight throwing from shortstop, after a day off and playing quite a bit."
Showalter said Mark Trumbo will be activated off the disabled list when eligible for tomorrow's day game here. The Orioles may take someone off the roster in advance of adding Trumbo after tonight's game.
