Chris Davis on ejection and more from the clubhouse

TORONTO - Even at a ballpark where they have averaged five runs a game this year and hit 15 homers in seven games, the Orioles offense could not break out.

When Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer in the last of the first tonight, the Toronto Blue Jays had all the offense they would need. They beat the Orioles 5-1 as the O's fell two games back of Toronto for the first American League wild card.

The Orioles had eight hits, just one for extra bases, and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring positon, leaving nine runners on base.

For Chris Davis, who went 0-for-3 with a walk and was called out on strikes three times, the frustration boiled over when he was rung up on a 1-2 pitch in the seventh. He argued and was ejected by home plate umpire Will Little, who a few moments later also tossed Orioles manager Buck Showalter for his first ejection of the season and 30th of his career.

"I don't usually say a whole lot," Davis said. "I just felt like the pitches that were being called against me weren't quality pitches, and I said something earlier on in the game and it really didn't make a difference. So I spoke my mind in my last at-bat and he obviously didn't like what I had to say."

"I'm sure," Showalter said. "What is driving the frustration, we won't get into that. But pretty obvious, but won't go there. We'll see. It's a lot of challenges that hitters face day-to-day and so do pitchers."

For the Orioles, the challenge is now trying to hold onto a playoff berth, after falling further behind Toronto with Detroit with Seattle trying to close in on them. Detroit won 12-0 tonight and trails the Orioles by just a game for the second AL wild card spot.

"We know we have to go," Davis said. "We know what's at stake here. We know what we have to do. It's just a matter of going out and executing. That's really all we can do."

Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez gave up one run on five hits over six innings and is now 14-2 with an ERA of 3.06. His ERA over his last four starts this season versus the Oriole is 1.44.

Orioles starter Kevin Gausman, who gave up three homers in the first inning here July 29, gave up two during his outing tonight. Leadoff batter Ezequiel Carrera connected off him in the third. Gausman went six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) and is now 8-12 with an ERA of 3.66.

"Me against them this year, the first inning hasn't been very good in all three of my starts," Gausman said. "Especially when you walk the leadoff guy, you're kind of putting yourself in a bad situation."

Back to the Orioles offense, Davis was asked if Sanchez was too good tonight or whether the Orioles simply didn't do enough things right to get some offense going against him.

"I think it's a little bit of both," Davis said. "He obviously threw the ball well tonight. We didn't have a lot to show for it, other than the one run. We just really couldn't string together a bunch of hits and get guys in scoring position to push runs across. We just weren't able to manufacture runs tonight."

Showalter added: "We did a lot of things to set some things up. We all know what we're capable of. It's fun. Our guys look forward to the games and the competition and the things they've earned. They had a really good pitcher that has been pitching good for most of the year. They've got a good bullpen and we saw that. Just going to have to do more things offensively and we will."

The Orioles have scored three runs or less for nine of their last 10 games. In that span, the team batting average is .204 and they produced just 24 runs with a team average of just .105 (6-for-57) with runners in scoring position.

The Orioles have five games left to find their bats and find some wins.
