Guthrie pitches the O's past Detroit, 5-3

Jeremy Guthrie continued his second-half pitching success tonight. Max Scherzer kept his going, for a while. The O's finally broke through with a four-run 6th to give Guthrie the lead and eventual 5-3 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday night. Down 4-0, the Tigers pulled within one, scoring three in the 8th vs. Matt Albers. Felix Pie came up with a big RBI single in the ninth for an insurance run as he went 3 for 5 with two RBI. Adam Jones went 4 for 4 with a double and run scored. Koji Uehara pitched a 1-2-3, 9th with two strikeouts, for his ninth save in 10 chances. With the win, the O's are now 7-4-1 in 12 series under Buck Showalter after winning just four of 34 series before he took over. They are 7-1 in their past eight road games and are 23-14 under Showalter, a winning percentage of .622. Guthrie gave up five hits over the first three innings, but none after that as he pitched seven scoreless, throwing 108 pitches. He is now 10-13, 3.74. Guthrie, who retired 13 of his last 14 batters, improved to 7-3, 2.29 in 11 second-half starts. The O's offense stranded eight over the first five innings vs. Scherzer, but finally broke through in the sixth. After getting five hits but no runs over the fourth and fifth innings, the O's came up four runs in that sixth frame. Jones led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored the game's first run on a Pie double. After a Josh Bell infield single, Cesar Izturis ripped a two-run triple to right center for a 3-0 edge. When Austin Jackson ran down Ty Wigginton's deep fly ball to center, Izturis scored on the sac fly and it was 4-0 Orioles. The Birds were 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position through five innings, then went 3 for 4 with RISP in the four-run sixth. Scherzer, who was 4-3, 2.15 in 11 second-half starts, gave up 12 hits and four runs over six frames to fall to 10-10, 3.60. With the win, the O's clinch back-to-back winning road trips for the first time since July of 2008. They are 4-1 on this trip which ends Sunday at 1:05 at Detroit.
